My hope is that Stellantis is working on another diesel engine that will work in the Wrangler, Gladiator, and Dakota.

I hope so too! I’m so happy the Boss’s didn’t listen.
I love this JTRD! The recent GDE addition has made what I want possible.
I build my jeeps to take me to the trail and back. My Favorites are Moab, Rubicon, Dusy and all the Hammer Trails in Johnson Valley. This is the real adventure for me.

I'm hoping that Antonio Filosa and Tim Kuniskis will pull a rabbit out of their hat.

Agreed. I'm keeping mine for 20+ years. 👍
I hope they bring back the same 3.0, but with beefier and more reliable components. And, get the normal oil temp down some.

The problem is that Stellantis (under Carlos Tavares) discontinued the EcoDiesel and sold VM Motori.

Do like Ford did with the early Power Strokes and Ram. Buy engines from someone else. Ram with Cummins, Ford with Navistar. I'll take a small Cummins in the JT.

That's a good idea. Unfortunately, North America doesn't have much for small displacement light duty diesel engines. Realistically, they could source an engine from Mercedes or go with another European in-house engine such as the 2.2L inline 4-cylinder which makes 200 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

Cummins 2.8 with a tune would be sweet.
No Mercedes diesel for me.
That 2.2 better come with 2k plus pounds of weight reduction.

Just because Stelli sold VM, doesn't mean they couldn't come up with an agreement.

Unfortunately, I think a nice diesel option is probably a pipe dream in the states. Ask most car or small pickup owner what they think about small diesels. I believe the majority would turn there nose up.
They don't understand that alot of the smaller diesels are greener than their gas counterparts.

That being said, I'll keep my fingers crossed. We love both our EcoDiesels.

Same here 2021 jlu rubi 3.0d when they came out. 2025 found a 2021 jt rubi 3.0d with 26k. Today, 85k on the jlu, 50k on Snazzy JT. Lost 2-3 mpg going from stock falkin at3s to 35" falkin AT4s. But they seem to work real well all around. Pacific NW, never know what you're going to be in if you drive all over.

Unfortunately, the Cummins 2.8L was never intended to meet the current emissions standards.

In my case, beggars can't be choosers. Jeep has worked with Mercedes in the past to supply the OM642 3.0L diesel for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Plus, Mercedes is still heavily invested in diesels. In theory, that would make sourcing an engine from Mercedes somewhat possible.

Just because Stelli sold VM, doesn't mean they couldn't come up with an agreement.
After being sold, VM Motori said they would shift their focus to agriculture and marine engines. But you're right, it's possible that Stellantis and VM Motori could come to an agreement.

I would agree that it's not likely in the next few years.

That's good to hear. We're very happy with our diesels. Stellantis has talked about diesel hybrids, so that might be the next technology that we see.

The word hybrid and diesel don't belongs in the same sentence. I hope not knowing Jeep's record.

Cummins could easily use the 2.8 as a base, bump up the displacement to help with the emissions.

Didn't realize the early Grand Cherokee diesel was a Mercedes. The current one isn't as good as the EcoDiesel. But guess it would be better than nothing.

Our EcoDiesel was also a marine engine. I think it would be easy for VM to switch back to on road if they wanted.

A diesel hybrid could be slick, if done right. If diesel/electric can motivate a locomotive, why not a Gladiator. Small diesel generator powering an electric motor shouldn't have cooling issues. Even a better worked out version of the 4xe with a diesel would be interesting.

I like options, the Gladiator needs that in the motor division.

"There’s been quite a bit of noise lately about Stellantis backtracking on the all electric plans and now even a possible “diesel comeback”.

Several media outlets are reporting that Stellantis is working on a new-generation 1.6-litre turbodiesel, widely believed to be rooted in the Italian MultiJet architecture, upgraded to meet upcoming Euro 7 regulations - the most important point here being the decision to drop former PSA 1.5 BlueHDi unit!

Instead, Stellantis appears now to be investing in a revised 1.6 MultiJet base - modernised, heavily reworked, and paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The setup would integrate an electric motor into a dual-clutch automatic transmission (eDCT), improving efficiency, lowering NOx emissions and helping the engine comply with much stricter real-world incoming Euro 7 limits.
This wouldn’t be an “old-school diesel revival,” but a hybridised, emissions-optimised evolution of a proven Italian diesel lineage." -Alfattitude

I seen that online. There was also mention of a 2.2L version.
Not sure if either would be enough motor/power. But it'll be interesting.

Based on what I've read, the engine is so far out of compliance that Cummins would need to start over on the design which could take 4+ years and tens of millions. It would be cheaper to use an engine that's already approved for 2027 emissions.

Didn't realize the early Grand Cherokee diesel was a Mercedes.
Stellantis and Mercedes have a pretty good relationship and share some technology.

Our EcoDiesel was also a marine engine. I think it would be easy for VM to switch back to on road if they wanted.
The EcoDiesel didn't start as a marine engine, but VM Motori did put the EcoDiesel engine in boats as test mules. The engine was designed for passenger cars. As a matter of fact, it was first designed for the Cadillac. The Gen 1 EcoDiesel went into the Maserati.

A diesel hybrid could be slick, if done right.
I'm open-minded.

A proper Diesel Electric would be interesting. As already mentioned it's what Diesel trains do, and I've been curious as to why it's never been done for the consumer market. All I know is my JTDW has been phenomenal so far, and I hope to get 200 -300k miles on it, if I'm fortunate enough that it lasts that long.
