Cloned the used ECM, installed in the JT and worked just fine with no weird lights or anything. So now I can send that one off and not have any worries, still have the stock one to reinstall.

There is a bit of prying to get the ECM out of its place but this is not a hard process. The hardest thing for me was getting my old laptop upgraded with a new hard drive and more memory to just be a decent computer and getting the proper version to make the program work.

All in all if you have any hesitation just read everything through. Double check connections. The process and writeups are perfect. This is not hard at all!

I finally got around to cloning my PCM after sitting on it for a month and am glad to report that it went perfectly on 1st try.

Nobody warned me the hardest part of this process was taking the stock PCM out. I probably spent 45 minutes working to remove that bottom 10mm nut. What a royal PITA. All in all, the process took about an hour to remove the PCM and clone.

Currently it's in my truck now and running flawlessly. Thanks @rharr for the instructions-tremendous help to the community for the writeup.

I received 2 prompts that weren't in the instructions. I clicked OK and yes, respectively in the following photos.

I bought the programmer from AliExpress by the link provided by @Gladiator_92

Now off the PCM goes to GDE!

Hello vette.
I tried to click on your link to aliexpress and it tells me I have to login. Says your info is protected or something.
I’ll go back and find another link, just thought I’d let you know.

Might have fried my PCM working on a separate issue. Two questions:

1. Can the dealership Bench test a PCM?

2. Can I still clone my PCM if it’s not working?

Pull the ecu out of the gladiator, 5 min, then 5 min to read the ecu, and about 10 to flash the new ECU. Then reinstall ECU.
So I got a question for you Justin, I have a 21 JT Ecodiesel and I was going to send pcm off for a tune and they told me if there were any permanent codes that they would not be able to tune. I have a permanent could for throttle air sensor which I have a new throttle body on the way and a dpf bank 1 soot load. I took it to the dealership and they told me my dpf was only at 22% so they reset system and cleared engine light but the permanent codes are still there, when I asked them if they code clear those he told me that they would have to do full diagnosis, remedy they issues and then reflash pcm. My question: if I was to get a clone, in order to marry it to my truck it would need to be installed to program it therefore, if the permanent codes were there they would also be transferred to the clone correct?

Clone means clone, it's a mirror of what ever you are using to get the base copy to make the clone. Errors and all.

Just a note of thanks for everyone here who has documented the process for obtaining/flashing/troubleshooting.

A couple things that I discovered during the process using the SM2 kit:
- removing old antivirus is really hard (I hadn't booted the WinXP laptop I had to use in 10 years). Take care of that first of you won't be able to load the USB fob drivers.
- pay attention to the purpose of the pins on the harness, not the colors. I was looking at the PPT and racking my brain because I was using the YELLOW line instead of the WHITE line. It was tinted yellow for contrast. Helps to read the instructions...
- Scanmatik 2.21.22, pcmflash 1.2.0 and USB dongle v1.20.67 used

Here's a photo of the labels on the pins while functioning. You need the first two serial/GPT pins on the left (mine were brown and orange) and the CAN pins on the right (CAN High was white. CAN Low was green). All red and black power/ground are self explanatory, but make sure you don't use the red VCC pins. Those are a different voltage.

I was able to download and write the GDE file but it didn't work when I swapped to the cloned pcm.
The engine started then shut after throwing a couple codes. I didn't have time to take note of the codes.

So I reverted the GDE tune to stock for the pcm and trans tunes and did the same clone with the stock files and same result (engine start then shut off). Is there a trick that I am missing? I verified that the stock files wrote to the cloned pcm.

I just opened my package and it is missing the CD.

Could anyone share the contents of the CD?

TIA.

I'm prepping to go through this process and was hoping someone can verify that I have the correct items to complete the project. Please let me know if any of these items are incorrect or out of date.

I got it setup with Virtualbox that I am running a virtual machine running Win7 off of my old MacBook Pro.

I should be able to share this image and you would be able to do the whole process off of a Mac or at least a 2013 MacBook Pro. Since it is a virtual machine there is no real worries with virus or malware.

I am practicing on the new ECU and when I read and save the file at the end I get the following pop up.

Once the binary is saved it pops up check sum error. Any thoughts?
