This makes the most sense, thank you.

I wonder if the best combo is then something substantial in the bed if you need it, and one of those Element extinguisher sticks inside the cab.
That's my theory. I will always want something within reach. A small extinguisher is better than no extinguisher. Having a larger unit available makes a lot of sense to me and with a Gladiator a larger unit in the bed works well.

I've seen various comments to the effect of "let it burn and let insurance sort it out"

I've said let someone steal it so I can get rid of the payments.

I'll never say that again after I've had one stolen. Although i came out OK on the insurance payout part, that was a log time ago. Just look a the long thread of the fire that got the 70k rig and the guy has seemed to moved on for al the beating up he's gotten. You will never come out ahead if you "let it burn and let insurance sort it out"

Honest question, why do people like to mount these in the cab, rather than the bed? If my truck is on fire, the last thing I want is to be forced to go back into it to try and finagle the fire extinguisher out. Wouldn't it be better to keep it in the bed, where it's easier to get at in an emergency?
Mine isn't in the bed because I don't want it stolen / getting hit by the things in the bed (because I tend to use the truck - like a truck, and I don't run a bed cover).

Mine is mounted on the left rear roll bar, just inside the rear door. I keep all my 'personal junk' behind the driver seat so passengers are nearly always in the passenger side front/rear only. If my g/f's kids are in the back (three across) we just pop it out of the mount and throw it in one of the cases in the back so they aren't bothered by it. Mount is made of aluminum and secured to the roll bar with stainless bands. I'm pretty confident it will stay put.

I bought it because it was a requirement to be on Merus property for the weekend. If my truck catches on fire, I'll grab if its safe to do so - but I have insurance so I'm not going out of my way. I have it for all of the other reasons ya might need one (camp fire, stove fire, another vehicle fire, etc).

That guy had a myriad of other things going on that worked against him. He is far from your typical case.

True but still, you'll always be far better off fixing one little thing than trying to battle an insurance company that doesn't want to pay out.

My parents just had a vehicle fire while we were camping. From that experience alone, I can tell you to get away from the vehicle and stay safe. You can try to put out a small fire somewhere isolated, but if the truck is on fire get away. It's not worth it.

True. You'll just need to make a judgment call in each case. My buddy Pute had an old chevy truck that caught on fire going down the road. We just took turns peeing on it and got it put out.

Totally agree, that’s why I keep a small on in the rear drink holder and a larger (primary) one in the bed

Try this. It’s cheap solution and works well. I have it under the rear driver seat. I have an extinguisher specific to electrical fires mounted there. I had to cut the two included mount plates to get it level to the floor. But that’s very easy and it mounts great. The Bracketeer

also if you have these floor mats then you just cut two 1” slits to accommodate the bracket.

I bought one of these mounts :

https://www.bartact.com/products/fi...roll-bars-holds-2-5-5-lb-extinguisher-bartact

Super happy with it. Easy access on drivers side behind passenger. Completely out of the way as I mounted it on the rear of the roll bar, out of rear passengers way - no bumping it, easy to rip a couple velcro straps and pull it out, stays completely stable with no rattling or moving around over the roughest trails.

Have you seen videos of those Element "fire extinguishers" in action? Respectfully, I mean, I think I stand a better chance of pissing on a forest fire and putting it out than one of those putting out a vehicle fire. I was all set to buy a couple until I saw a real life video of one in action.

I've had "miscreants" remove my externally mounted fire extinguisher and discharge it into the bed/back of the vehicle - twice. I'll always put them inside after cleaning up that mess.
