Hey so I want to change my diff fluids since i did a lot of towing this summer. I am only at 17,000 miles but i know it cant hurt. My question is whether i need a diff fluid that includes friction modifier additive for either the front, rear or both.

You do in the rear if you have the limited slip - Trac–Lok® Anti–Spin Rear Differential?

Under Standard Equipment = Tru-Lok Rear Axle unless you have it replaced by "Optional Equipment" which is not visible in the photo.

Ok i do not show anything like that under optional equipment. So it looks like i dont have limited slip in my rear axle.

You have a Tru Lok - an electric locking rear differential.

I have the 21 JTR, electric lockers and my rear diff calls for limited slip oil and front does not. Does your book mention anything on it?
EDIT: Tru loc does not call for LS fluid so I made an error statement above.

Where does it call for the LS additive? It's only needed for LS units that uses clutch packs. If you have a locker, you don't need it. Rubicons have front and rear lockers.

This is what my book says on pg 462. Parts department confirmed my VIN and needing LS oil in the rear. Maybe Tru-Lock and trac-Lock are different beasts.

So, I thought I’d just call another dealership and they said it doesn’t matter if you end up putting LS oil in a non LS diff. “The additive is cheap insurance and won’t do any harm if it’s used”.
@ShadowsPapa might want to chime in
