I have to wonder - over time, how will the black tops look after being in the sun for a while. Like other black trim? Dunno.
Maybe just fine. I know many have struggled with the cowl piece turning gray.
What's the non-painted top made of?
Does it scuff - and if it does, how do people deal with it? Ignore it?

I've had no problem with the painted tops, and I've tossed mine in the back a few times (and rushed to put them back on during a major massive storm event)

It's all in what people prefer personally.
I apply Chemical Guys Convertible protectant every 6 months going into winter and spring and mine has held up quite well.

That’s asking for trouble!
Not sure how? I just purchased a new pickup sight unseen from a dealership that delivered it on a trailer to my driveway. Never set foot in the dealership. It was possibly the best vehicle transaction I’ve ever experienced.

I guess if there was something so bad that you would refuse the purchase it could go wrong. Never had that happen with a brand new vehicle. Everything is covered by a warranty.

I’m also not overly picky as my jeeps and trucks get used off-road and working.

The "non-painted" or non-color-matched top is painted...black. It's made of the exact same thing that the color-matched top is made of. It's just painted black with a black textured paint.

So touch- ups aren't a problem?

...any dealer would be paid the same for warranty work, whether they sold it or not.
One dealer here takes care of customers "who bought elsewhere" hoping you get your next new vehicle from them.
Years ago, when we had a Ford F450, I had a dealer service guy tell me that they had a hierarchy of how service work was prioritized:

1. Warranty work for their customers
2. Non-warranty work for their customers
3. Non-warranty work for other customers
4. Warranty work for other customers

So, they would accept non-customer warranty jobs, but you'd be waiting longer for the work to be scheduled.

Heard pretty much the same with maybe 1. & 2. swapped as paid non warranty work made them more money.

Dealerships Service Departments are not a "First Come, First Serve" business model.

Thank goodness my local Jeep dealer (2 miles from my house) doesn't seem to treat me any differently than someone who bought the vehicle from them. I'd hate to have to drive 32 miles to the dealer where I bought mine.

I've heard that - not directly - but I have to believe there's logic in it.
And it's probably why some won't take on non-customers - it means customers get shoved down the line.
May vary with how busy a shop is - not so busy, won't matter. Busy - will matter.
Makes sense.

If termites ate metal that's probably how it would look. wth?! But...I have a feeling that is rust behind the panel.

There's hardly any body parts to rust.
It's way too soon (for rust, etc.), and the wrong paint pattern for that.
Rust causes paint to bubble.

That top would weigh 400 pounds if it was steel.
Like the hood of my Mojave?
