I never said anything to the guy, I follow my own ethic, "You Jeep, Your Rules". I always gave him a beep and a wave. He can do whatever he wants and I'm envious that he has the cash to DO all that to his Jeep. My whole ponderance was why do all that if you're not going to DO all that.

My closest comparison is someone that buys thousands of dollars worth of off-shore fishing gear, yet they have a fear of water, a fear of boats, hate the taste of fish and live in Kansas.

Ive seen some vehicles like this and its very cringe. You look like a goofball and most other drivers would agree.

Soo…..Why do people collect things and/or are called ā€œCollectorsā€??
Most things they collect, sit on shelves, in boxes, in pretty cases, never touched…..
Everyone has a purpose…..it’s not YOUR purpose… it’s not the purpose of the items they collect or buy….. it’s THEIR purpose.

Jeeps are grown men's Barbie dolls. Some of us never make it out of the Barbie Dream House into the front yard to play with.

I mean, if you really want to get into it, why buy a Jeep if you never remove the top or doors? Why buy a Jeep if you never leave the asphalt? I'd wager there's more Gladiator/Wrangler owners that have never done either of those things vs those who have, yet that's what owning these vehicles is all about.

To each their own. Not my monkeys, not my circus.

I realize this thread is about someone who has the stuff but never uses it, but there is a real stigma about people who leave their rigs set up all the time. When I first discovered "overlanding" I let the critics get into my head with the whole stigma that you can't leave your stuff on your truck everyday or you're just a poser. "Look at that idiot driving around town every day pretending he is going someplace cool", "oh you're looking pretty cool with that RTT mounted to your truck while at Walmart!". I quickly learned that the reality is, it's too much damn work to completely disassemble my truck between trips. Not only is it a lot of work, but then I have to have someplace to store it all, and then I have to reassemble and make sure I grab everything I need when I'm heading on a trip. It's far easier to just leave my truck ready to go at any time, and then I can easily just grab a bag of clothes and disappear for a weekend with little thought and effort. I do remove the traction boards and fuel cans when not needed, and I try to keep things mounted outside to a minimum, so even when I'm fully loaded for a trip all you're really seeing is an RTT, traction boards and fuel cans. Anyone that want's to talk shit can eat shit, because as they talk shit from the mall parking lot I'm planning/taking my next adventure.

In my office parking lot right now there are,

2 TRX's
1 Raptor
1 Rubicon 4xe
1 Rivian.

None of them have been offroad, in any capacity, ever.

There are at least a dozen more "ordinary" trucks that have clearly never had a hitch in the receiver.

In the summer, multiple Corvettes, CEO drives a M series BMW, a Camaro ZL1.... None go to the track.

This is America, people buy what they like, and do as they wish with it. I have RC trucks I never run, tools I rarely use, guns I never shoot, a cottage I stay in 10 days a year.

All thing someone else probably looks at and goes, man, if I had that, i'd use the hell out of it.

I too have a safe full of guns that have had maybe a mag or two of rounds through them and thats it. That would maybe change if I had more land, or if I'd stop buying calibers that rounds are rarely on the shelf...

I have to fight myself on judging people's rigs. LOL. If it's stupid...... it's stupid.

But I'm really trying hard to be a good Christian (think kindergartener trying to play Mozart here) so I spend the rest of the day kicking myself for being judgmental.....

My biggest challenges are rubber-band mud tires on 24" rims and the grumper stuff. I HATE almost all things SoFlo Customs....

But I also know there are people that hate my KC Pro light bar and snorkel. so I just have to bite my tongue and leave em alone.

Another story.

Close friend of mine has a bass boat. I think it's around 10-11 years old. Bass Tracker. Not extremely expensive, but a nice little boat.

Has a wall of fishing poles as long as the boat.

Behind the boat is a wall that looks like it was pulled from Bass Pro. Fishing baits and gear hanging like he's trying to open shop.

That boat has less than 25 hours I'm told. His wife doesn't like fishing much, and he never goes by himself. He told me the boat stays there in the corner and gets dirty from lack of use - he pulls it outside, shines it like a new penny, and pushes it back in.

Hell maybe he just wants to hold on to that dream that he thought him and his son or his ole lady would go fishing on the weekends, and it never materialized.

Probably $40K in shit that barely touches water.

You're actually helping to bolster my thought process; you have all that gear strapped on and you actually use it.

Bro. My coworker has a TRX. He drives it roughly 5 miles to work.

That's the extent of its usage šŸ˜‚

Well that and putting five people in it for lunch and showing us the launch control as a party trick.

Pretty sweet truck...

I echo this sentiment. I too have rifles that never get used, I keep buying and building RC cars I rarely stop to play with, and I'll buy a great tool to use it once a year.

Makes me happy.

On the topic, I have a 2015 Camaro SS and I believe it outright BOTHERS some of my car friends that I leave it mostly stock. I treat it like a commuter car other than parking it under cover and keeping it clean. I don't want to mod it heavily, I don't want to race it, etc. I just go drive it.

It got to a point where my best friend had to start defending me to all our other car friends cause they just could not understand why I bought such a car and don't do anything with it šŸ˜‚

I won't lie. I am defending the african safari guy - but I had a rack, an RTT and cases for a bit and I felt like such a tool. I didn't have anywhere to store it during the off season and sold all of it.

I believe in live and let live, and have never passed judgment on peoples' vehicle choices, habits, etc. I could not care less. But what I will say is that we are currently living in the most consumption based, narcissistic "look at me" society in history. Social media and sites like Instagram, etc. have promoted this.

A very large number of people are showing off online to try to portray an image that may or may not be accurate. Personally speaking, I am barely comfortable even posting pics of my stock Jeep here, and prefer a low profile in life in general, so I don't really "get" that whole scene.
Apart from this another car forum, I don’t do social media anymore. I get the OP’s rant. Here in central FL, I see plenty of Wranglers and Gladiators decked out to the hilt but oft wonder if they ever see mud. I bought mine 2nd hand a bit modified but not crazy and I’ve never been off the road as I’m too lazy to clean up the mess.
