Oil filter housing

I have a 2020 3.6l. 2 of my friends with the 3.6 have had cracks in the filter housing and had to replace them. Have the gladiators been seeing this issue? I usually DIY my oil changes and now I'm thinking I should buy a filter housing to keep on the shelf just in case.

The common thread seems to be over tightening. I take notice of the position of the cap before loosening, then put it back to the same location, no issues so far.

If you search on here you can get the impression that everyone is on their 3rd housing but that’s just the nature of forums.

I would imagine the problem is down the road a bit.

With the housing being mostly plastic, multiple heat cycles will make it brittle. That and Average Joe's propensity of over tightening things makes it a weak spot.

I tighten mine with zero torque. Twist it on untill it bottoms out and no more. The oring seals it, not the torque...imo...

70k miles and no problems. Like others said, do not over tighten.
If they are cheap enough, put a spare one in the garage for insurance then you will never need it.

18 ft pounds isn't much force on the handle of a wrench at all.
I have done every oil change on the vehicle and no problems so far.
I wouldn't dare take it to a quick change shop or a dealership.

forgot the guy's name, but he did a YT video on changing those things out; ordered a metal replacement housing, and tried to upgrade some gaskets at the same time, and spewed out oil all over the place, and had to tear it all back apart and do it again. I think he ordered a second one, and it had slightly different specs. Will try to edit this, and post a link if I can find it. Please forgive any typos, b/c there's a stupid ad that's covering my typing, and I can't see what all I'm putting down.

I do not think the housing cracks as much anymore over time but rather the base that screws into the top of the cylinder head galley flexes and the o-rings blow out.

I agree with Hootbro. Oil the O-ring and don't over-torque the cap. The base gasket/orings will fail first and oil will run down the bell housing. Change the filter housing then.

It was a big problem with the JKs, I had a 14 that never leaked. They have revised the oil filter/cooler several times and I don't think it's an issue any more unless you over tighten the filter cap. There are probably 15 million 3.6s in about every vehicle out there. Plastic parts are everywhere.

I did that when I first bought mine. If it's your forever truck it makes good sense to do it.

My wife has a 2015 JKU Sahara and the oil cooler (filter housing) went on it. My mechanic said it was common on JK/JKU 3.6's. Not sure if Jeep ever fixed the problem with them or not. He replaced it with an aluminum one. So, probably not a bad idea to have one on hand.

That is true.The O-ring is what does the sealing.

I have been watching for one to go on sale and picked up one a few days ago when I seen it on sale. As a have on hand to install when needed.
