I was not a Jeep guy at all, my other 3 vehicles are a 91' Toyota Hilux RHD turbo diesel solid axle,th a 93' Toyota Surf RHD turbo diesel solid axle. and a 89' Land Rover Perentie RHD turbo diesel solid axle. All three over 35 years old and with more than 200k miles on each, just the Hilux has over 400k alone. These are business vehicles, and this past year I broke down on the trail w/customers. Knowing that my rigs are all a little old, and not wanting to be in the same situation of a possible breakdown, I went looking.

One of my sponsors (Kenda Tire) said they were starting a new build, and knowing I was a Diesel solid axle guy, they recommended the Gladiator and only the 2023 (one, because it was the last year of the Diesel option on the Gladiator, and two, by 2022 they had worked out the engine design problems. Lastly when I found out about the Farout Edition for the final year of the diesel, of which they only made 1000 (look it up), I was sold. So much so that I am trying to find another for myself and one for a friend.

All that to say, 100% DIESEL!!!!

The EPA made it a piece of ****
you can fix it though, if you’re other options don’t work out.
Looking at their other posts Ducknpukin's issues aren't emissions related, it's likely from cam position sensor wiring harness getting too hot. Theres a relatively new TSB for it, dated 04APR225 which would explain why they've been it's been in and out of the shop since 2023.

With that said, EPA and emissions systems still suck.

Ive had all the TSBs done. I actually believe my truck may have been a guinea pig for some of them. They rerouted the wiring harness, changed cam position sensor(twice? 3x?), changed computer, trigger wheel, cut my original sensor harness and soldered in a new sensor (twice).... im still having issues im trying to document them before taking it back for repair attempt #12....

Jeeze sounds like you need a new shop! What a cluster…
Ive been to two shops and, giving credit where credit is due, they've both been good to me. I don't think its them. I think its just a trash product from Jeep.

Any Truck/engine you buy will have haters. That's is the only guarantee that can be offered. Some eco diesel trucks have shit the bed. Most have not. Some gassers have shit the bed. Most have not. I love my diesel. It has so much more torque than my other 3.6 that is feels different. If they offer a hemi I might look into it. Regardless of maintaining costs… you have to enjoy driving it or what's the point. Eco diesel has done me good for 36k.
I like this reply best of all. The 3.6l has potential issues and the 3.0l has potential issues. I think the most critical component would be the OP. The OP should understand what common problems the modern diesel have and how to avoid them.

Another factor would be knowing that you have a diesel tech in your area. Not all Dealerships have specialized diesel techs.

Hello All,

Finally, about to the point where I am going to replace my 2014 JKUR, she's got 235,000 miles and it's time to do something. I know that I'm replacing it with a used Gladiator Rubicon, just not sure what engine yet, going to purchase an extended warranty as well. Wanted a new one but can't justify the price. I've had the 3.6l in my JKUR and have put 145,000 miles on it since I purchased. Have driven a gladiator with the 3.6l and 8 speed transmission and it does miles better than the one in my JKUR with a 5-speed. What I really want is the diesel though. I've driven a diesel JLUR and loved the engine, everything about it from just a 25-mile drive. Obviously, I've heard the nightmares that the diesel's can be. Just have 3 questions for the diesel drivers.

-What is your overall experience with the EcoDiesel's?
-Would you get the diesel again if you had to do it again?
-How has maintenance/replacements parts gone for the diesel engine since it is no longer being produced?

Thanks for all the answers!
Did you end up buying one yet or still looking?

One big repair cost that will be ongoing with the eco diesel is the intake replacement every 100K or so.( P200A/B codes)I'm going to post an entire teardown and replacement thread when I do mine next weekend. parts are 600-1000$ by themselves and if ya pay for the work it will be at 1000$ minimum labor to get it replaced because the intake ports should be blasted as part of the repair as well as checking the EGR cooler since it will likely be near plugged at that time too. You can thank the EPA and Jeep for willingly producing something that now has an intake as a consumable item that WILL require replacement. Oh and it will likely happen right after the powertrain warranty expires like mine did and Jeep will tell ya to F' off on assisting in the cost of repair as has been my experience so far on all of the issues I have tried to get addressed. Most people that have experience with diesel know that they inherently cost more to maintain, but forewarning, the emissions systems required by tier 4 are destroying them prematurely, and the hidden/undisclosed ownership costs that I am starting to see are significant enough that I would hesitate to buy one again. It's not like the eco is a true tow capable workhorse like the one ton motors( which also share the same fate from EGR). I love my truck and plan to keep it and work these maintenance practices into it because I still can't get anything close to what I have from any other automaker, but it will be the last NEW jeep I ever buy. Jeep has become number one in my book thanks to Stellantis and the cheap out practices that make jeep truly junk from a longevity point of view..

Are you in an area that test emissions?

What was/is so special about the Farout version?
It has all the things on the Rubicon, but comes with most of the things I had to add on my other vehicles after the fact;
  • "Diesel 3.0L" hood graphic
  • Exclusive "3.0 D" tailgate badge
  • "FarOut" tailgate badge
  • Black fender decals
  • 17-inch low-gloss black polished aluminum wheels
  • 33-inch mud-terrain tires
  • Steel front bumper
  • Body-color fender flares, roof panels and top
  • Satin black grille
  • Mopar spray-in bedliner
  • LED Lighting Group
  • Black leather seats with red accents
  • Black leather-wrapped dash panels with red accent stitching
  • Cold Weather Group
  • Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group
  • Safety Group
  • All-weather floor mats
  • Skid plate package
  • 110 inverter w/bed outlet
  • Jeep Bluetooth speaker w/charging port
  • lockable rear under-seat storage
  • Third Gen Dana 44 heavy-duty axles, a 3.73 axle ratio and the Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio
  • 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine with best-in-class 442 lb.-ft. of torque, the TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission
And probably more I can't remember right now.

I’ll be looking for this write up. I’m running a diesel at 126K, and have been showing those codes for a little while. Still runs and still has power and great fuel milage, so I’ve been planning this as a post-season project.
