What do people see as the pros and cons of a vehicle mounted tent, whether bed or rooftop? I can see it would be nice when the ground is wet or uneven, but the downside is that you have to take it down and pack it away if you want to move the truck... we have the same issue with our tiny RV.

So the DAC tent doesn’t fit the JT with the RSI. Also, very rude customer service.

I’ve been eyeballing this one next. Local CO person that sews them.

Perhaps it feels a little safer, especially the rooftop tents. Definitely keeps the creepy crawly bugs at bay versus a tent on the ground

I suppose... though when backpacking I don't even use a tent; just a bivy sack and a tarp if it looks like rain. I always figure, why trek into the wilderness just to zipper yourself into a nylon box? Campgrounds are different, of course, there a tent provides privacy. But then I rarely camp during bug season.

This won’t help with the rain but will 100% solve the mosquito problem. I had a piece cut big enough to just throw over a Subaru Outback so I could sleep in it with the windows open and it worked perfectly. You can order it cut to whatever size you need and they will hem the edges and install magnets in the hem if you order it that way. I used it for a few years and it never ripped or got holes in it.

sooooo. I went this route. If Wifezilla is not with me I can sleep diagonally with the tailgate and rear gate closed and if she comes I do use a tailgate tent...love this..I went this way because I like to drink and roof top tents+alcohol +gravity =ouch

It's like an Old-shool pole tent, rear window zips out and a tube sort of thing connects the tent to the truck bed. I used it a few times with my Dodge full size, don't have a cap on the Jeep. It works pretty nicely, slide out of bed and you can stand up to get dressed. Similar to your set up, probably a bit less square footage

I bought one of these two weeks ago to work with my softtopper. I used it this weekend and worked out better than expected. I realize now that I didn't take any pics at camp but here are two from the driveway after initial install on Thursday night.

Bumping this old thread with the same search. Recently added the smart cap, and looking for an extension type tent. Do not need a full size sleeping area with plans to sleep in the truck bed, but a small enclosed area for gear at night, and changing area.
Have in my mind exactly what I would like to find, just have yet to actually find what I'm looking for!
Essentially, something like this, just a 1/3 of the size.
