Just a novice guess, but I would think it would be determined by if you have experienced a failure or not. No failure, no contamination... failure... you got shit everywhere... lol

Service writer yesterday told me if you have driveability problems, then it's contaminated.

Saw somewhere else they check a screen as a first step and if there's any debris, they do the work. I'm also glad to see by looking at the instructions that I won't have to pull my bumper and winch. Was afraid they would need to remove the grill to access something.

Do you know what he meant by drivability problems ?

Took my 3.0 to the dealer Friday just to see. The service writer followed the instructions giving per the recall, with me standing right there. The first HPFP recall for them.
Before ordering the parts a technician must inspect doing various things to verify if any metal is in the fuel system. Metal in the system you get new fuel lines (some can be cleaned), injectors, fuel filter housing, in tank fuel pump and HPFP.
No metal in the system…just the HPFP.

You would think checking the filter screens and then pulling some fuel samples and having them analyzed would be the easiest way to determine foreign debris within the system.

Changed the fuel filter on my 17' Ram eco yesterday. This is what contamination will look like. Good amount of aluminum present in housing. Tested with magnet as well. If nothing sticks to it than its aluminum from the injection pump, not rust. The usual garbage from the dealer "No Parts available". Keep running it until inoperable.
