I hesitate to say anything is a must have, because you can must have until the list is so overwhelming you never get out there, and that would be a shame.

A saw is a must have for me, I have a nice small chainsaw now, but used a hand saw for years.

Self recovery is a must, I used, and still use a Hilift, but I have a nice winch now also. They are dangerous, I guess, that's life though.

A little water, a way to get more, some space blankets, a way to make fire... These are things always in all my vehicles anyway.

How dangerous they are? 🤣 Hardly.... If people knew how to use them properly.....

A stock jack will only work 'safely' on a flat and/or level surface. Think about that for a minute....😊
You were concerned about getting stuck? Do you plan on getting stuck while driving on flat surface?

You can't use a stock jack as a come-along (manual winch). Hi lifts have many other uses...you should look up some Youtube videos.
To me the high lift sucks because of how high i have to get it in order to actually get the tire i want off the ground. I stopped bringing mine and left it home for fencing work. I run a air jack off of my compressor. works great when lifting from angles or loose surfaces. Absolutely a game changer when dealing with sand.

As most have said - recovery gear, tools, first aid, comms, food, water.

Not fancy or Instagram ready but this stuff went with me to Yellowstone - camping in Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota.

Everyone has covered most everything. Good call on the MaxTrax you already ordered. A good shovel, with as long a handle as you can fit is super helpful if you do get stuck. Don't be scared of the Hi-Lift just learn how to use it properly and where on your vehicle it can be used. Check your steel bumpers for lifting points as many have these built in. Start with he Hi-Lift angled slightly away from the vehicle at first, typically, as it will end up closer as you lift. And always end with the handle up.

One item that hasn't been mentioned is a Lift Mate tire attachment for the Hi-Lift. It can be used quickly to lift the tire that's stuck to stack rocks or get a traction board directly underneath to fill the hole it was in or bridge across it.

The .40cal is fine even for bears. People have stopped grizzlies with 9mm. A fishing guide in Alaska took out a charging grizzly with 6 shots from a 9mm. The pistol caliber debate is pretty pointless. You don't want to go looking for a fight with a bear. There's a reason nobody hunts with a pistol (unless you're one of those .44mag revolver with a scope types). If you're worried about big bears keep a 12ga or a rifle in the Jeep.

Nothing to add to what has been already state as far as what to take.

That said, I know where Chester County is, and if your planned route will take you into New Jersey at all, don't get caught in that state with any firearms, even unloaded antique firearms which have not been fired in over 100 years, without an impossible to get NJ carry permit. Jail time is a certainty if they find your guns on a routine traffic stop, or a fender bender in NJ.

Although a long way around, it is possible to avoid NJ by going up the PA TPK Northeast Extension and catching I-84 eastbound near the Scranton area. Find out what the laws are in the states you will be travelling through and which ones have reciprocal permit agreements with PA.
I-84 to I-87 to Albany, not up to I-91. Massachusetts doesn't do reciprocal carry. Besides, it's VERMONT... what are you trying to defend yourself against? If you see a bear, just wave your arms and say "hey bear" and it will run away. If you see Ben & Jerry, don't make eye contact, curl up and play dead, and they'll probably sell you ice cream instead of mauling you.

That's 100% false, you're confusing concealed carry with firearms transportation. If the law was anything like you described it would have been struck down by the Supreme Court for interstate travel/ commerce violations. You don't need a permit to carry an unloaded firearm in a locked container in/ around/or through new jersey. Loaded open carry is legal anywhere that shooting is legal, so most forest land, blm land, etc you're good to go (I realize you don't have a lot of that back east). NJ laws are very similar to CA in pretty much all of those regards, no carry reciprocity, no carrying loaded in your vehicle, locked container for unloaded pistols, etc.

You can try explaining it to the cops. People have been arrested and charged for illegal possession because they missed a connecting flight. It's best to avoid the whole issue if you can.

As for being 100% wrong about NJ,
I think NJ resident Gordon VanGilder might disagree.
Philadelphia, PA resident Shaneen Allen also might disagree.

Air compressor. Deflated tires (or "appropriately inflated," I should say) are much less likely to get stuck in the first place. I'll let you do your own research on those. You'll want something kinda mid-sized for 35s, and starting out you'll be fine with a portable one that clips to the battery with alligator clips. Not internal-battery-powered IMHO.

Skip the Hi-Lift. Dangerous for Jeeps, and likelier to rip plastic panels off other cars than to actually jack them up

sat phone: yes for parts of the world so remote that you might actually die before someone finds you. Parts of Alaska, deep ocean, Death Valley, Nunavut etc. NF in Vermont - no

Winch is not overkill IMHO. Late fall in hilly / muddy country does sound slippery.
Great advice, IMHO....except the Hi-Lift. I had my JL hung up in boulders in New Hampshire on one of the toughest trails I ever drove. With 2 winches and snatch blocks, we could not get it out. The Hi-Lift was the only thing that could get it up and over the boulders upon which it was hanging.

BUT....if you don't know what you are doing, yeah, probably best not to mess with it. They are dangerous and must be handled with great care. But they do work well on the rock rails and I have a front bumper with specific holes designed for a Hi Lift on my JT. Rugged Ridge makes front and rear bumpers with those holes. But in the case of my JL, we had to lift from the rock rails.

There are very rare times that it is needed, but that one time.....Similar to a winch.

If you’re not blazing a new trail then I’d save the money and skip the winch. Keep it in 2WD and let that 4WD be the safety net.

I personally wouldn’t fret much about having a firearm either, having backpacked all over black bear and mtn lion country with no issues so far. Hang your food away from camp and you’re golden. Black bears are skittish and run away pretty easily. If a mtn lion wants ya then you’ll be gone before you can draw anyhow 😉
