Hey folks. Newb here and had my first experience driving a JT this evening with the Willys package. I love the look of the Willys package and was looking forward to the experience. The ride was great. Overall the truck is far more comfortable than I expected it to be. The only distraction was how loud the Firestone tires were. It's loud enough that I'm reconsidering the Willys package. I have no intention of serious offroading with the JT and I'm more interested in the Gladiator as a daily driver and occasionally tow a small travel trailer on trips. Is it reasonable to expect tire noise to be dramatically less in a Sport S or Overlander than the Willy's? I don't need rock rails and could easily swap out the wheels on a different model for the Willys-style wheel if I wanted to.

Also, if this has been discussed already, please direct me to a thread. I couldn't find anything using the search tool.

First Jeep?

They're not as sound insulated as most other vehicles, so the noise can be disconcerting.

Not sure which Firestone tire they are using, but if it's an MT then yes, they can be loud.
If you're going to keep her a Pavement Princess, you can switch to All Terrains which are a little quieter.

I've never owned a Jeep. I've driven a few Wrangler's (Sahara models) and don't remember that much noise from the tires. Also, it was definitely tire noise, not road noise. As to which Firestone tires, I'm not sure. It was a new vehicle so I'm assuming it was the standard tire that comes with the Willys package.

They are mud tires and part of the Willys package, sort of a throw back to the original Willys Jeeps. They are loud as hell and I can usually hear them coming . The Sahara you drove has a much more mild AT tire that is much quieter . Not sure they have an optional tire on a new Willy’s if ordering . You can always get different tires , The Willy’s package has some nice features….Jack

My 2-Door Willys Wrangler has the MT tires they are loud. I drove in my buddies Rubicon Gladiator and his was marginally quieter, My High Altitude is way quieter than both of those but it has AS tires. If you are not off-roading a good set of AS tires would be your best quiet option.

The Firestone MT tires on the Willys are pretty loud.

The Wildpeak AT's that you can get on the Rubi and the Mojave actually get fairly loud as they age as well.

A Sport or Overland comes with car like quiet tires but they'll look pretty dinky. Stick with all seasons or an AT with a tight tread pattern and it will be fine.

I bought my Willys used. The tires are off road, mud tires. They look great, and the ride is not bad. But those knobbies make a lot of noise. I swapped mine for road tires and wow what a difference. First time I ever hear the engine or wind noise while driving.

M/T’s like to sing when you get on the road, sounds like you’re going to want a sport S or maybe a nice used overland.

With the Sahara models, you definitely did not get the Willys experience. The Sahara models typically have street times (if stock) and will have less of a rugged package when it comes to trim and comfort. If the Willys has a soft top, your noise level will be more than a hard top. If you get the willys and change out the tires, there is a good market for barely used jeep tires/rims on FB marketplace.

I have the Willys with the BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires on it. They are extremely noisy but after pricing new tires I got used to it. Besides that I think they look good on the truck. If I wanted a quiet vehicle I could have kept my Ram Laramie.

Thanks, everyone. This is great advice/information.
My concern wasn’t so much about the tires making noise as it might be something to do with the Willy’s package. From what I’m gathering if I were to put an all season tire on the Willy’s it would be as quiet as a Sport with all season tires.

Yes, tires make all the difference in the world.

The other way is to take everything out of the interior and put down Boom Mat or Lizard Skin to help knock out the road noise.

owned a willys for 6 months. when i swapped to a mojave the tires were MUCH more quiet for the 50 miles i had them... then swapping to kenda klever at/2s on my mojave were even more quiet than the falken wildpeaks my mojave came with.

General consensus that I've seen agrees that Willys has the loudest standard OEM tire.
