My Jeep was $915 for the year IIRC it cost ~$45K new. My Miata qualifies for "Classic car" registration, which caps it's assessed value at $500, tax on it was $14

I pay the state government roughly a $900 tax yearly, that will go to pay for the roads that I will have the privilege to drive on with the vehicle I paid a nearly 9% tax on the purchase price of that will also go to pay for the roads I have a privilege to drive on. I paid both the 9% tax and continue to pay the $900 yearly tax with my income, which was already taxed at about a 25% rate - that also goes to pay for the roads I have the privilege to drive on. In order to drive this vehicle that was charged a 9% sales tax and a $900 yearly fee to drive on these streets which are a privilege to drive on, I also need to pay for diesel fuel which has a tax of 37 cents per gallon built into the price - those 37 cents per gallon also help build the roads I have the privilege to drive on. I guess my contributions are finally making head way, as it seems every major and side street in my city is currently lines with construction cones.

Thankfully, the $900 DMV fees will start to go down as my vehicle depreciates, but as @Snake Eyes has stated, it is painfully slow to go down.

Real property taxes are really low in Nevada though, which is awesome.

Massachusetts we pay separate excise tax of $25 for every $1000 of the vehicles value. Estimated at 90% value for the model year, and goes down by 20% each year till it hits 10% on year 5. 45k truck I paid to the state a little over $1k first year, last was $600… property tax is separate and it is estimated by a blind witch with a a crystal ball ?

Property taxes on homes aren’t bad, but they absolutely gangster your wallet for property tax on anything with a engine that touches the public roadway.
LOL - speak for yourself there!
The whole area is up in arms here over what the county has valued homes at. I guess they think that whatever inflation is, it should be applied to homes. There's no way in heck even on a good day we could ever get what ours is valued at by the county - and taxes on this old house, 1,000 sq ft. it's just crazy.

As far as vehicles - check out what it costs to put in 100 yards of highway these days.
It's a 5% use tax on vehicles - based on the difference between trade and cost of the new, or total cost of the new if there's no trade.

Got ours today.
Rural Central Virginia
21 Mojave - Sticker price was $62,225
Personal Property Tax - $675.28 (6 mos)

Typically, my area is pretty low on taxes, so I'm curious as to how this compares to others.
Not sure what that is that your giving as an example - is that the tax paid based on the cost of a new vehicle?
Or is that some sort of annual registration fee?

Iowa, when you buy a vehicle, you pay 5% of the vehicle's price. If you trade something in, you pay that 5% only on the difference.
Then there's an annual registration fee that goes toward roads and highways.
So you pay a sales/use tax on the purchase, then annual registration fees.
Which are you referring to?

Here in NJ we don't have the personal property tax (we have more than enough other taxes, thank you!), but there's the sales tax of 6.625%. Title and registration fees for 4 years (with the extra fee for Pinelands plates) was $377.
Dang that's dirt cheap! We're at about $400+/year registration (license) fee.

I am confused. Are we talking about tax on your house/property? Or annual registration fees? Or just one time tax for purchase of a new vehicle?

DMV fees are stupid in California. On my 73 Nova which is now 40 years old, I still pay 240 dollars per year. It used to be 40-60 per year till our government decided to go crazy.

On a side note, California is about to start paying extra taxes for people buying homes with good credit. If you’re 680 plus, they tack on an extra 1-1.5% in taxes to the house you buy. If you’re less than 680, you get 1-1.5% back in taxes. So you bust your a$$ to get good credit and it bites you in the a$$

Tennessee is so ridiculously high on everything!!! 1000's of $$$$$ a year on land, vehicles, food, everything!! No one else should move here. EVER!!! They tax you to death then tax you for dieing!! No one eles move here! You have been warned!

Ok so I'm stretching it just a bit. We have a pretty good tax structure here. No state income tax. My home on 5 acres runs $950 a year, tags are $74 a year for cars and trucks per tag. Speciality tags are $115 a year. Motorcycles are $50ish a year. We do however have one of if not the highest sales tax in the nation at 9.25% and that includes big items like Jeeps. At least everyone in the state pays the same tax fairly. So based on that, as mentioned above, no one else should ever move here!!

Well don't smite the messenger,

Thankfully we have 0% Personal Property and State Sanctioned Theft Income Tax here in the Free State of Florida.

We do however have to spend some extra on AC, mosquito repellent and sun screen at a 7% Sales Tax.

Some states have a personal property tax. It is like the property taxes on your home, but applied to other tangible items like your vehicle. It is separate from purchase taxes and registration fees.

Pa. Land of taxes supposedly, 6% sales tax paid about $2400 on my $52,000 Mojave minus $10,000 trade of my Suburban, about $160 a year for registration cause it is a truck, Suburban was $36 cause it was a car. Property tax on pretty new 2019 small house large garage on 3.5 wooded acres $6400. I know gasoline taxes are higher than Jersey and Delaware per gallon.
As for cost of road and bridge construction that is my employer’s main focus involving 95 separate companies in three states, going rate for highway projects is about 360 million for 15 miles of reconstruction, we are doing several very large six year duration jobs currently and 23 bridges. Guess I can’t complain about taxes used for roads and bridges! …..Jack

We don‘t get charged personal property tax in Ohio, but I do pay close to $13K a year in property (home) taxes a year. Fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, the question won't fit all states or locations.
There's property taxes as if on your land and house, etc. - your real estate
There's sales tax on your purchases (excluding many food items and drugs)
There's sales/use tax you pay on a vehicle at the time of purchase
There's registration or license fee to get your plates and registration slip - an annual fee based on vehicle value and weight, etc.
So when you say "personal property" - we don't have that.
We pay an annual registration or license fee for the vehicles. It's a license to have it on public roads.
