I have the Expedition One Dual Swing out and had the Shift AutoWerks frame brace installed. The parts are less then 1k and from what I’ve seen you can do the install yourself
I'll take a look. I run both front and rear Expedition One bumpers on my RM 3500.

Edit: I looked. As I would expect, it is a good piece. I feel the replacement tailgate is the better option.
1. I get to lose weight from removing the stock tailgate.
2. The tire sits, what looks to be 6" farther forward on the tailgate option. The tailgate rack places the tire over the rear bumper, not aft of it.

As for the frame stiffening, sign me up.

Excellent logic
Are those 40s you have on your JT?
I think I have made a decision regarding this topic, and that is to move to the 40" tires. Simple enough...Since I have real beadlocks, I'll just do the tire swap myself.
On the subject of where I might mount that spare, well, that's a different story. Completely undecided there.
My current setup, which the wife is arguing to keep, is an IKamper roof-top tent. With that configuration, I need bed space for all her shoes, makeup, more shoes, and some spare shoes! I have all our "Overland" stuff in plastic bins and have that packing list pretty well fine-tuned.

My concept of the operation going forward is to add a smallish MDC or Pause travel camper to a tow hitch I will now have to reinstall. Tow that thing to Basecamp, then detach, air down, and head out to Funville. One little problem is that the towable might not agree with some of the multiday adventure trails I am looking at. Of course, I could go with a bumper mount as well...ahhh, so many decisions!
Could mount the spare on the trailer? Or maybe a receiver mount for the tire, then you only need to pack it around on longer trips.
Get a kit like this to take along.

I don't have it, but several on here do.

Just a thought. Make up a mount that holds the spare above the bed and below the rack, horizontally. That would keep the bed open for storage and keep the weight above or slight in front of the rear axle.

Three ways of going about it that come to mind. First would be a post that mounts to the bed floor, second would be something that bridges the bed rails, and third would be something suspended off of the bottom of the rack. The third would probably be the easiest as a spare tire winch could be repurposed.

Those are all great ideas.
I had initially dismissed the idea of mounting 130+ pounds up high. It would move the roll center upward, which would make it handle a bit worse on the road and a bit tippy on slopes.
Funny, but I never considered hanging the spare beneath the rack...hmmm...

Making decisions daily!

I'm moving up to the 40's and leaving the 5.13's in there for now.

I was immediately faced with the spare tire dilema. Good news: The underside of the bed is gonna get a lot cleaner.
Bad news: No place to put the spare that doesn't take up bed space or add a ton of weight

Then...

I found this:
gladdy 1.webp

This is a cool tire carrier that replaces the rear tailgate. What I like about that is the fact that at least I lose some weight while gaining some with this replacement steel part which has to weigh a bunch more than the tail gate.

tailgate.webp
hello just a couple of questions. is it made in America? they refer to TX but not manufacturing there. what gauge/thickness is the steel? paint or powder coat? does it have bearings or bushings in the swing post? how does the single center lug nut lock to prevent theft? or becoming loose? are there ribs/reinforcement behind the wheel mount to prevent flex in the plate? do you use a tonneau cover? if not, then rain entering the box when in motion through the gate perimeter openings would not be an issue. are third brake light and rear camera mounting accessories available? do you have an after market rear bumper mounted/planned? i utilize my ExpOne bumper as a 72" wide skid. it also projects forward to the wheel opening flares. there is 6.5" between the oem tailgate and the tire. yes, i created a net weight gain behind the axle but have zero concerns over structural integrity of my new bumper, tire carrying safety or the side of the box bending due to the Wilco mounting point.

I thought about going without a spare before. I believe I even floated the idea on this forum, where I was hammered for thinking such a thing.
But with flats, those who have and those who will...
That repair kit is interesting, for sure. I have cut a sidewall, debeaded (a bunch). and had a hundred thorns and nails penetrate the tread face.

I'd have to really think about deleting the spare, but something way down deep is resistant to the idea.

Edit: I just ordered that GlueTread tire repair kit. I already carry a standard puncture kit, and this will replace that.

Holy Crap...A couple questions??? ;-)

hello just a couple of questions. is it made in America? they refer to TX but not manufacturing there. Don't know, but they say it is built in Texas what gauge/thickness is the steel? I believe they said .188 wall on some of it, 3/16 on some, the rest, I don't know paint or powder coat? Powder coat does it have bearings or bushings in the swing post? Don't know, but I have used both in the past successfully on a rear tire carrier. how does the single center lug nut lock to prevent theft? or becoming loose? It seems to have a retaining pin, I suppose one could substitute a lock, but have to see it first. I will say this. I have carried spares on a tire rack for years, more than a decade or two and never had anything stolen. The spare did break off once and I didn't notice it until I got home!are there ribs/reinforcement behind the wheel mount to prevent flex in the plate? Don't know do you use a tonneau cover? Nope if not, then rain entering the box when in motion through the gate perimeter openings would not be an issue. are third brake light and rear camera mounting accessories available? No knowledge, but I won't be using either. do you have an after market rear bumper mounted/planned? Yes,I have a Metal Cloak mounted currently

I don't know if you've mentioned what's happening inside the truck, but if you're doing a rear seat delete you could just roll the tire in there 🤷‍♂️

Getting back to that tailgate spare tire mount. I received the following response from them:

Is Wilco Offroad made in America? All Wilco manufacturing occurs in Burnet Texas or within neighboring counties. All steel is made in the USA.

what gauge/thickness is the steel? Adapter bars are 0.125” wall with 0.250” wall weld bosses and 0.750” walled pivot.

paint or powder coat? Textured powder coat

does it have bearings or bushings in the swing post? A combination of Polyurethane bushings, Delrin friction surfaces and Heim joints with stainless bushings. All are user serviceable. We have units that have been in continuous service for two decades through rear-end collisions, vehicle fires and neglect that are still in top function and highly valued for reliability.

how does the single center lug nut lock to prevent theft? or becoming loose? There are two 3/16” steel plate eyelets on each side of the wheel to provide for a variety of user supplied locks. Compression of the polyurethane wheel cone keeps the wheel mounting hub from becoming loose.

are there ribs/reinforcement behind the wheel mount to prevent flex in the plate? Yes. The frame behind the plate is 1.75” diameter round tube with .0125” wall

are third brake light and rear camera mounting accessories available? Rear camera and Brake light accessories can be mounted mid-wheel to ½”-13 female threads that are tapped into the 1”-8 threaded rod.

Ha ! I just started to make a seat delete for my pup. . Fellow AV8R as well. Following this thread. I found a 392 SWAP place in Florida 25k out the door. And also this is my first post on this forum. New to Jeep.

Well, welcome to the Jeep world and Jeep-Postin'!
Seems to run parallel to buying Jeep parts...
FW or RW, or both?
If you tap the link to my build thread and go back a few thousand posts, I detail (with pictures so aviators will understand) how I built mine. I did have to make a reinforcement repair to mine two months ago, but considering how long it has lived in there carrying a refrigerator, tools, pups, and who knows what, I call it a win.
$25K is very nicely priced. Obviously requires some prudent research, but if it pans out, that's one in the "win" column!
