28,000 mile Rear Diff Fluid Change

This is just informational. I changed my rear diff fluid today in my Mojave and man I am glad I did it. The oil was very dark. Definitely had some shavings on the fill plug. “My 2022 Mojave doesn’t have a drain plug” I filled it until it started coming out of the drain hole. Let it sit there and drip for a while before I buttoned it back up. I did a lot of towing last summer and I have been off road a few times. Highly recommend doing it before 30k miles.

I realized that I forgot to add thread sealant so I picked some up this morning and pulled the fill plug again to apply. I wasn’t concerned about it leaking but I like to got the trails and drive through water when I can. Gotta keep the water out.

You didn’t use the fluid that came with it. Trust me my friend. Been there and done that. They can in fact tell you replaced it with a different fluid. It’s unfortunate but that won’t be covered during failure most likely.

There is a lot of grey area with warranty, most dealers won’t bat an eye. OEM’s also can’t force you to use their OEM fluid, as long as it meets the spec, it flies. There is also a grey area in what Dana who produces the assembly recommends vs the vehicle’s OEM. Making a blanket statement like this based off of a single experience is… just that… one person’s experience with a lot of missing details.

It is almost like you are trolling with this aversion to early or unscheduled maintenance. There is plenty of legitimate reasons to change diff fluid early to even include trail riding after water fording.

Be hard pressed to find somebody that has been denied warranty if proper fluid and practices to change said fluid was followed.

Nope. I’m just telling you to not say anything to them about you doing any of that stuff if you need a warranty claim before then. Let them tell you if they do t like what you see.

Your diffs shouldn't be reaching high temps, that's not the concern that needs to be addressed. Depending on who you ask, some would say either nothing at all, or something that's solvent resistant ( the diff fluid will eat through some things ). White thread tape ( like what you might see on air compressor fittings ) won't work. Search AMZN for "Gas Line PTFE Thread Seal Tape", and you'll see what I'm referring to. I don't know the type/kind of the sealant that you purchased, so if it's solvent resistant, then you should be good.

Just double checked that it is high heat resistant as well as chemical resistant. It list rear axle seal plug as a use case.

lol… I’m sure you’ll get your warranty claims denied for over maintaining your truck with the proper fluids.

28k isn’t every oil change or every other month. The recommended interval according to page 298 of my owner’s manual is 40,000 miles if frequently towing or off-roading. What does towing mean? What does off roading mean?

What if I tow a 4,500lb trailer 300 miles a day at 70mph Monday thru Friday and stay in 4lo every weekend and wait until 40,000 miles? Would the dealer be more likely to say my rear diff going out at 38,000 miles with my use is abuse or that it’s a good thing I didn’t bother to check it until 40,000 miles? What if I buy a Mopar performance parts set of diff covers? Would that be considered tampering or do I need to make sure I do it at 40,000 miles on the dot and make sure a dealership mechanic learns on my rear end how to swap fluid on one?

Funny thing is if you buy new whole DANA aftermarket diff assembly or do a gear set change, DANA recommends a 500 mile first fluid dump. DANA OEM units installed by Jeep and it is just a fluid level inspect unless a "Severe Service" and then it is a 40K mile change interval.

Do they run the factory gears through a REM-like polishing, negating a break-in process?
