Just rolled into Montrose, four mountain passes down one more to go. I have been turning my fan on manually once oil reaches 240*. No derates today. The changes I made seem to be working, granted it’s only 75* ambient out.

Has anyone else had success using the fan manually and avoiding overheating? I took a short test run with my camper last week in near 90 degree ambient temps on rolling hills. I pulled a bit faster than I normally like to make sure I was generating excess heat and found similar results as to the fan's effectiveness. I got the oil up as high as 247, then would turn the fan on through the Tazer and without changing speed would see oil temps drop to 230-235 and coolant to 206 and held steady as long as the fan remained on, even through inclines. I wouldn't have expected the fan to matter on the highway, but it did appear to.

The fan itself must be restrictive enough that having it turn even with the increased wind speed while underway makes a difference? It cant turn the whole time we tow or it would wear itself out in short order? Maybe a reflash of fan operating code from the OEM when oil temps rise to a certain point could help though.

There is a small hole behind the front grill that passes to the air box. Look at my photos on page 1.
Is this from a shop manual or did you daylight everything? It is impossible to see between the hole in the plastic support and the air filter box, I spent some time with a flashlight and it's just a rat's nest in that area. If that hole does feed the intake in some way it is obscenely small for a main air engine intake.
Does it connect to the bottom of the box? Or does it connect to the "other" visible intake plenum that seals against the hood? Is that then an air/water separator for fording?

Now that I'm done with 20 questions, I'll provide something useful to the discussion. The intercooler/radiator combo is definitely lacking a bottom seal against the grill. As others here have noted, creating a simple seal along the bottom will force more air through the radiators.

Sorry if this has been asked before. Is there any chance the front skid is holding additional heat in the engine compartment on the JTRD?

Sorry I thought I had read somewhere the Rubicon had one
The OE steel winch bumper has a skid under it. I think it could go either way for the heat.

70mph flat and anywhere between 50 and 25 over the passes. Keep in mind these passes are on hwy 285 and hwy 50 not I-70. In effect I was able to go as fast as I felt comfortable going through the twisties. Just made it over Red Mountain same story.
Turning on the fan with the Tazer. The fan is effective at dropping temps at all speeds, even on the interstate. Roughly 10-15* on coolant, I still believe an aftermarket oil cooler is needed.
Ok made it back from my trip to the San Juans.
On the west side of Monarch pass I derated, this is a long steep grade and outside temps were sitting right at 85*. All other passes went well, though at times power was limited, I’m guessing EGT’s however I was still able to maintain speed with most traffic. I am still of the opinion that an auxiliary oil cooler is going to be the solution for this engine.
Just for grins I may try a DPF back straight pipe and a cold air intake. I’ll probably wait to see Banks’ offering for the intake.

That’s not too bad of a incline IMO especially since the majority of its speed limit is 45 mph. I’m not knocking the run but it’s a shame that we are having this issue with those conditions.

tops out at 11,300, thebase is at 8800. All in roughly 7 miles. It was more than the ecodiesel wanted.

I’m pretty familiar with Monarchs Pass. I’ve towed doubles over it many times in my way to Taylor Park. I still wouldn’t expect these issues at that speed there.

Just read all 19 pages. ? My takeaway is that I’m not going to make any mods for now, other than update my Tazer so I have the option of manually controlling my fan. And I learned a new word, farkle.

Here is a video where an eco diesel Wrangle and Gladiator cut power at the same time.

Edit. One has been regeared and the other has not.

Following to see what people come up with, I was between the diesel and just the pentastar and a lot of this is creating some worry, my order should be showing up in the next couple weeks holefully.... I guess it is possible it's gonna get delayed because of the couple weeks stop recently. But we will see... keeping my eye on this but hmm does this one problem make the ecodiesel not worth it or is it minimal enough and only situational that it's fine
