So I'm a completely new Jeeper. I bought my JTR back in October and I'm at 5300 miles now. I know I need to change oil. I don't really know anything about my dealership other than I wouldn't recommend buying a vehicle there. I received two free oil changes with the Jeep, so do I have the dealership do them every 5k or am I better off doing them myself? I've done plenty of oil changes and repairs in my life, but I also know the vehicle is under warranty. Do I risk anything with the warranty by changing my own oil? Should I let the dealer do it and continue to do it till the end of the warranty period? I honestly don't know what's best for the trucks sake.

I appreciate the feedback!

$Free.90Free baby! Worst case scenario they blow up your motor and have to buy you a new one. Why assume liability when another party will? plus a free 45 min to go look at other cars on the lot and enjoy free coffee and donuts. Can't be beat.

I'm a total, over-the-top do-it-yourselfer... and I take advantage of the Jeep Wave oil changes and tire rotations. Why not save a little cash (what, roughly $45.00 each?) to let someone else do it.

But... as long as they do it right. Make sure the qty of oil listed on the service receipt is correct, and ensure they are not over-torquing your oil filter cap. If those are good, then let them do it!

First, they aren't "Free", it's in the purchase price somewhere.

Second, do it yourself, know it's done right. Save your receipts, make a note in the Owners Manual in the back where there are blank pages. Date and mileage of oil change and if you want, brand of oil and filter.

I learned my lesson on this with my last new truck--a recall where they had to replace a tire. Tore the wheel up doing something which should have been so basic. The cross threaded lug nut found a couple of months later was the icing on the cake. The last time, a door panel needed to be removed--rather than using a trim tool, they clearly used a screwdriver. There always seems to be another scratch or chip after the dealership gets done with their "service". No thanks........By the time it takes me to just run to the dealership and check in, I can have the oil changed--and know that everything is torqued and filled correctly.......

Plus, you get an extra quart of oil, a drain plug tightened to 60 ft lbs, and a cracked filter housing! Can't be beat!

You all recommend a certain brand oil and filter? In my previous vehicles I've always used Pennzoil ultra platinum because its easy to get in town.

Penzoil is what is “recommended”. So you’re good to go.

Free oil change is grossly inconvenient in my life. It's not even warranty or I don't trust the dealer issue to me at this point. I just change my own. Hell I don't even keep the receipts from the materials. A real rebel I guess...
