Both diesel shops I had it at said the oil cooler was external, I don't know, I didn't crawl around under it to look. They both took lots of pictures from top to bottom to try to figure something out. Bulletproof Diesel in Mesa has a pretty good rep for diesel performance and after looking at mine was going to buy one to play with it. I just sent my contact an email to see where they are.

Dealer told me that if I replace the oil cooler, it could cause warranty problems, so there must be a cooler other than where it is on the 3.6 motor. The whole idea with the diesel that is stuffed into the small engine compartment is that heat is an issue. There is no issue on the Ram truck with the 3.0 as there is plenty of space under the hood.

So based on what the dealer and Bulletproof Diesel told me I'm still thinking there is an external cooler somewhere for the 3.0. I can't find one but I know that the Ram does not have one for sure and there is some complaining of derating on their forums also towing 8000+

Now for Trans and Coolant, you can't go wrong with a Mishimoto radiator, I'm thinking that is the next thing to try. If your coolant is running 20 degrees cooler you would think the cooler engine would also have the oil running cooler. It really helped out on my 3.6 Wrangler here in the hot AZ summers
You can also run waterless coolant, which will help control hot spots where boiling and cooling efficiency is reduced. Waterless does not cool any better than water based, it just keeps hot spots and boiling from happening.

I run evans in my vintage Jeeps and I will say you see about 10 degrees higher coolant running temperature. It extracts more heat from the engine but also holds more heat.

Finally got a chance to tow my trailer today on a test run. I have a 20' vintage Silver Streak, supposed empty weight is 2500, likely closer to 3000 with some extra stuff and water inside. Tongue weight is supposed to be 250. No load other than myself in the truck.

Outside air temp was 105, the main grade I went up was 5-6 miles at 6 degree gradient, with some rolling grades after. Elevation gain was about 3,000 feet. This was I-5 in Los Angeles from Castaic up to Pyramid Lake. AC was on all the time.

Overall, I was able to hold 55-65 (and often faster if I wanted, but in CA we're limited to 55 towing). On the main grade I maintained 45, watching the EGT gauge and trying to not exceed ~1,100. Also, manual shifting almost the whole time. Oil bounced to 260 once, water got up to 235 or so.

Most useful thing for me was watching the EGT in different gears. Maintaining 45, 4th gear kept me right at 1,100 on the EGT. 5th gear spiked to about 1,250. I moved between 4th and 5th several times and the EGT difference was a consistent 100-150. Intake temp was 160 during the slow, steep section, dropped to 120-140 on more gradual hills.

Also noticed that just 2-3 MPH could make 100 degree difference on the EGT, maybe 3-5 on oil and/or water.

Overall I'm pretty pleased, I can live with some slow hills as long as I have a way to monitor crucial temps and keep the engine happy. It seems that limiting my speed based on a fairly conservative EGT keeps the rest of the temps under control and hopefully keeps me out of derate territory. Thanks to @CreepyJeepy for the OBD dashboard and inspiration to get it set up.

I have some long distance towing coming up in a week, I'll have a full load of gear and will be heading to Wyoming. I'll be tracking and reporting results after the trip, probably about 3,000 miles by the time I'm done.
Sir I am curious do you know or can you recall what RPM's you are running at when going 45mph in 4th gear ..? thank you Glenn in Phx.

Hi . . . I don't recall exactly the RPM for that speed/gear combo. But in general 2500-2800 is about as high as I seem to run.

Looks like we might have a good media example here maybe someone with cooler solutions could work with him for publicity.

Casey's Jeep overheated without the trailer behind it last year and so did the Epic Glagiator during the same trip and climb.

Just for some context about that first de-rate that they had, it was on the Kootenay pass that starts at about 700m(~2300') and the summit is at 1775m(~5800') with a 8% grade for a large portion of the way up.

For those interested here is the vid

The de-rate happens at 9:47

So- is airflow the significant difference between the 1500 and the gladiator? I am seeing far less 1500 hot oil posts than I do gladiator. Is their radiator larger? Looks like they have the same trash (my opinion) oil cooler….. and the 1500 has shorter gear ratios (from what I can tell 3.55 vs 3.73s in the jeeps).
Ram is tuned slightly different- looks like a few more torques, which I would think for this issue would mean hotter??

Any other significant differences that I’m not seeing?

Ram 1500 cooling stack is huge. More width and more airflow. We have a 24x24” square to cool everything in

What was the name of that company again who is coming out with a new radiator? Maybe we can get on a preorder list.

See but mine were below half the entire time on my display, max coolant I saw was 240ish, tranny 224, and oil just a hair over 250.
Again none of them ever showed above half. I'm going to have to ask the dealership about that one.
I think the gauge in the instrument cluster is a joke. It will either read normal or all the way to hot with nothing in-between

got the red dashboard while climbing the sierra nevadas at 75mph. needs new rad right now.
e to the club. Funny, FB is full of claims that the JTD does not have a heat problem, but I think they just have not experienced the conditions that cause it.

Were headed out on another trip soon without the RV and I fully expect to be traveling 40mph on I-80 where the speed limit is 70-80 mph.

We traveled I70 in Utah last month. Temps around 105F. Speed limit 80. What I notice was the temps stayed around 215F water and 225F oil cruising with the cruise control on for hours. Come to a hill, both would raise about 5 to 10 degrees.
