We traveled I70 in Utah last month. Temps around 105F. Speed limit 80. What I notice was the temps stayed around 215F water and 225F oil cruising with the cruise control on for hours. Come to a hill, both would raise about 5 to 10 degrees.
Thats tolerable, but add in some 6% grades and we likely got problems!

I went up Eisenhower and Vail passes when the temps were around 90F at the bases. The highest temps I seen were water 227F and 239F oil.

The highest temps I every seen were going up the Summit on RT40 outside of Uniontown Pa. It's a steep 3 mile long hill. Trying to keep my speed above 70 mph. When I hit the top. Water was 236F and oil was 248F. This was on a 85F day.

Finally got a chance to tow my trailer today on a test run. I have a 20' vintage Silver Streak, supposed empty weight is 2500, likely closer to 3000 with some extra stuff and water inside. Tongue weight is supposed to be 250. No load other than myself in the truck.

Outside air temp was 105, the main grade I went up was 5-6 miles at 6 degree gradient, with some rolling grades after. Elevation gain was about 3,000 feet. This was I-5 in Los Angeles from Castaic up to Pyramid Lake. AC was on all the time.

Overall, I was able to hold 55-65 (and often faster if I wanted, but in CA we're limited to 55 towing). On the main grade I maintained 45, watching the EGT gauge and trying to not exceed ~1,100. Also, manual shifting almost the whole time. Oil bounced to 260 once, water got up to 235 or so.

Most useful thing for me was watching the EGT in different gears. Maintaining 45, 4th gear kept me right at 1,100 on the EGT. 5th gear spiked to about 1,250. I moved between 4th and 5th several times and the EGT difference was a consistent 100-150. Intake temp was 160 during the slow, steep section, dropped to 120-140 on more gradual hills.

Also noticed that just 2-3 MPH could make 100 degree difference on the EGT, maybe 3-5 on oil and/or water.

Overall I'm pretty pleased, I can live with some slow hills as long as I have a way to monitor crucial temps and keep the engine happy. It seems that limiting my speed based on a fairly conservative EGT keeps the rest of the temps under control and hopefully keeps me out of derate territory. Thanks to @CreepyJeepy for the OBD dashboard and inspiration to get it set up.

I have some long distance towing coming up in a week, I'll have a full load of gear and will be heading to Wyoming. I'll be tracking and reporting results after the trip, probably about 3,000 miles by the time I'm done.
After all of this time and experience, what are your preferred towing RPMs in the heat, up a grade?

I haven’t towed, but no issues so far here in TX, 104+

I watched a video of a guy/YouTuber towing a heavy travel trailer from NC to Ouray, CO with gasser JT.

He had oil temps 240+. Had a range of ~100 miles per tank most of the trip, ouch!

Really depends on the altitude, grade and weight. Below 2000' on a medium level grade I can flip between 6 and 7th gear, maintain 70-75 mph. Above 5000' and a steep grade, 4-5th at 45 mph, maybe even dipping into 3rd if it is really high, say 7000'+. Add 1 gear higher for lighter weights, in my case an empty trailer (no water, gear, etc) and not full payload in the vehicle.

It feels like the critical altitude for the turbo is around 5000-6000', so above that we're dealing with reduced power as well.

On level ground or slight grades regardless of altitude I am able to maintain 75 mph w/ AC at any outside air temp. This is fully loaded and towing

Just googled JT hoods, and these came up. Of course, the argument can be made that you're altering the factory aerodynamics under the hood, which could make the problem worse.....but for those of us that have put a winch and light bar directly in front of the grille, we've already accomplished that.
I honestly couldn't care less what they look like, so long as they improve heat dissipation. Thoughts?
Edit: aside from the engine (presumably) where are the locations of the other critical elements that appear to be overheating and is it possible that these would improve air flow to those areas?

I put in an oil cooler to help with temps. I would say I get an average 10ish degree drop. I just used the bungs that are already on the motor next to the factory oil cooler. I didn't use a pump but I've considered it. I think the bigger problem is EGTs.
Didn't get a lot of pictures. Will try to get some next time I'm under there

Oh, I just got an iDash gauge to be able to watch EGT and other temps. EGTs are through the roof under load.

Anyone a tech and have info/diagram for what these are, were, etc.
curious of flow- is one an in and one an out?

What oil cooler are you running? - 10* might be enough to keep it from de rating!

10° might be all we need and I would assume this would reduce the heat load on the cooling system too.

I don't expect to climb a 9% grade at 110° towing 6,000lb all day at the speed limit, but it would be nice to make it to the top of a 6 mile grade without driving on the shoulder!

Since this is uncharted territory and no one really knows what happens when you tap those bungs and add a new system, DO YOU plan to run regular black stone oil analisis to make sure there is unplanned wear due to loss of oil pressure or reroute?

Don't get me wrong Love where you took this, but with such limited info on this engine package so far, it seems everyone is just stabbing in the dark with their fingers crossed nothing they do has unintended consequences.

This is a joke but..... we should start a go fund me so one of us can buy a long block and tear it down and figure out how it all works.

They are definitely in and out from the oil supply. I believe front one it out and back one is in. I didn't keep track after I decided to not run a temp switch. The oil temps are always higher than the temps available for those switches so the fan would always be in anyway. I just have it running off one of the aux switches and set it to remember on/off position after ignition. I can turn it off that way if I need to.

I think you could probably get more cooling out of it if you added a pump.

The cooler is the better Derale cooler with the 10" fan.

I'm not sure the cooler would fit in the same spot on a gladiator without a lift. I had to drop my emergency brake cables about 3 inches to clear the cooler.
