I wonder the reasoning behind that. Is it just so they know the ECM is good and they can't get improperly blamed if the ECM turns out to be defective? That's my best guess.
They mentioned it had to something do with ensuring it had completed all of the emissions checks among other things. I should have inquired into the other things. I don’t have emissions inspections where I live so it probably wouldn’t have made a difference for me but I did what he recommended anyway.

Crap … I sent them an ECU with about 45 seconds of idle time, just to verify it worked …

let’s see what happens.

All GDE does now is unlock your ECU. You actually download and install their tune with the included hardware sent back with your ECU.

I should have specified, I sent the ECU to EOC.

Most of the post I’ve seen about tunes and spare cloned ECUs have sounded like they also sent in the newly cloned one, which is what I was planning to do until I talked to Keith @ GDE. I haven’t read of anyone having difficulties from doing that. I’m guessing you’re not either.

Just did it, super easy and only took maybe 25 mins. Didn't fully trust the provided software so dug up my old gateway laptop that somehow still works. Zero issues following the instructions posted a few pages back.

Truck is currently running perfectly with the cloned ecm, I'll be sending that one in for the tune and keep the factory one stock.

That's awesome! I'm looking forward to doing the same. I ordered the interface a little while back and it arrived last weekend. I ordered an ECU from EastCoastMoparts before ordering the interface from China but it's still not arrived. UPS did a great job of getting the package from Maryland, up through Pennsylvania, over to Ohio, down through Kentucky, to middle Tennessee, then over to east Tennessee, all in a 36 hour window. Props to them for ignoring the obvious direct route down 81 but still making the scenic view in a time efficient manner. Unfortunately that's where the package has been for two weeks... Waiting for delivery. It seems the couple inches of snow that Knoxville received was too much for UPS' union drivers. They "didn't feel safe" delivering packages on the same roads that FedEx, USPS, and school buses were running their routes on. The snow lasted from Friday afternoon (original delivery date) till Saturday afternoon, at which point the roads were all but dry. FedEx was out Saturday and Sunday but these UPS drivers, according to local customer support, took 5 days off "for safety". Dennie at EastCoastMoparts apologized for the delay, emphasized their commitment to customer satisfaction, and asked that I not hold them accountable for UPS' incompetence. When asked to make it right, he joked about it not being worth 500 dollars of his time. So that's where it stands.. a vendor that won't go after a shipping company or send out another unit, a shipping company that is incapable of doing their job, and a customer that sits in wait while everything else I've ordered, before and after this ECU, has arrived in a timely manner.

So back to my question....anyone interested in cloning for a fee???
If you were closer by, I'd be down to help out. With the shipping involved anyway, I would think it may make sense to have the tuner do the cloning. The tools to DIY would seem to be more cost effective than paying shipping and/or a cloning fee. And you have the benefit of being able to back up any ECU that you may have for your vehicle.

Alright, so... I may have been better off buying the true scanmatic tool vs this Chinese knock off. I have successfully cloned my PCM. It took paying for a second PCM from EastCoastMoparts while waiting for the debacle with UPS to be sorted out(the original is still not delivered).

To say the Chinese knock off tool is buggy would be an understatement. I used a different 12vdc supply since the one that came with it would get pulled down to 8 or 9 volts. That helped some. It took multiple attempts to read the programming and multiple multiple attempts to write to the new PCM. Has anyone else been experiencing this?

Anyways.. the new PCM is attached to my Jeep's wiring harness and a successful test drive has been completed... No codes, no weirdness.

Thinking I should probably go to the dealer and see if new firmware is available and clone that before sending this thing off to get tuned.

Also.. to answer an earlier question in the thread; if you click the "unlock ECU" button when writing a file, it returns an error that says the wrong module was selected and aborts the process.

Sounds like all Chinese knockoffs are not created equal.

Mine works consistently and without errors or bugginess. Luck of the draw, I suppose.

Same here, mine worked perfectly on the first try. I did have to use another 12v charger I had in my "misc electric crap" box that every dad has since the one that came in the kit had a euro plug.

To update in regards to having a cloned ECM tuned:

I cloned a new ECM myself off of a stock factory ECM. Verified it worked in the truck only to idle for 30 seconds, removed and packed it up and sent it off to GDE. This is against the advice of GDE. Received the tuned ECM back, slapped it in, flashed using their new process. Seems to work great. Guy just left my garage with it so if there are any problems I'll update but we took it around the block and all seems good.

I of course recommend you follow the instructions of GDE or whoever your tuner is. We were willing to assume the risk. I had no reason to believe it would actually cause any issues. Just wanted to share our experience. Guys at GDE are top notch.
