I believe it is a bunch of crap!
The article you posted is outdated, misleading, nor does it cover any of the facts about full useful life.

The service life (full useful life) of 120,000/150,000 miles is the certification level an auto manufacturer issues for a light duty application. FCA/Stellantis chose 150,000 miles for the Gen 3 EcoDiesel emission certification.

After 10 years/150,000 miles, Stellantis no longer guarantees the EcoDiesel will meet emissions since components become less efficient and/or fail over time. The EPA understood the inefficiencies with time and use, which is why they used the language "full useful life" when the law was created.

In 2020, the EPA goes back and adds additional language without going through Congress. They add, “The Act’s prohibitions on tampering and defeat devices apply for the entire life of vehicles, engines and equipment. They apply regardless of whether the regulatory “useful life” or warranty period has ended.” That's very different than what was interpreted for the last 50 years, or since the law was established in 1974.

The Supreme Court said that the EPA (or any branch of government) cannot make policy or regulations without clear and explicit authorization from Congress. This is why the Trump administration was able to roll back emissions.

Plus, the DOJ has ended criminal prosecution for emissions deletes.

Biodiesel,
I want to thank you for keeping up on all this for us. I would have never known about the "useful life" argument unless you brought it up to our attention.
I wish GDE would post a little more info on what there "Afterlife powertrain tuning" actually was on their webpage. Is it a full stage 2 tune, can you remove dpf, ect from the vehicle?
Also, are our gen 3 ecodiesels tier2 or tier3 engines?

Im only at 25k miles but plan on keeping this thing long term so will be interested in this when my time comes.

Thanks again.

It’s important to note they have currently ended criminal prosecutions- but civil penalties are not criminal and can still ruin your life.

GDE can tune it any way that you like. Personally, I will keep my emissions equipment intact so that I can switch from the stock tune to a deleted tune. So far, only my 2015 EcoDiesel qualifies for the Afterlife Tune, so I haven't made any decisions yet. I will most likely have a tune that turns off EGR and DEF but keep the DPF functioning. I need to consult with GDE before making any decisions. Right now, I'm currently running the GDE EPA Compliant Tune. The cost to update to the Afterlife tune is only $200 since I'm an existing customer.

Something to think about. When doing one of the tunes that shuts off the DEF, egr, etc., but you don't have to remove anything. So you no longer have to regen. Over a period of time. Won't that clog up the SCR?

Not the SCR, but there is a good chance that the DPF will end up clogged after awhile.
DEF is injected into the SCR and is a separate function from regens, which take place in the DPF.
In theory, you could turn off the DEF and EGR and still have it regen if so desired.

GDE can disable EGR but keep the DPF function. As a matter of fact, the GDE tune is so clean that you will have less regens. I don't know about the new vehicles, but people would run distilled water in the DEF tank to save money and keep the system functioning. Obviously, those running distilled water will need to switch back to DEF during the winter months if they live in a cold weather climate where water can freeze.

I don't know what updated information you're looking for. Are you talking about emissions being rolled back to 2012 levels?
