I don't have it on my '14 WK2.

My wife does on her XC60. Unless you are trying to punch it off the line, the lag is minimal. She can disable it, but doesn't.

I would definitely want to disable it if off-roading. Would hate to have the engine turn off while in the middle of climbing something.
Pretty sure 4low disables it. As does a low battery, cabin to warm with th AC on, vehicle hasn’t reach operating temp, etc.

Not directed at you kayakmike but in general lots of people who have never used it making up reasons to hate before they try it. I am keeping a open mind and we will see.

I do agree with this... It is worth trying. It may work for you. I won't hate on it and say everyone has to disable it. Your mileage may vary.

I have a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has ESS. I spent about 1 month with it on, and it drove me insane. I tried to turn it off each time I powered on, and would forget. I ended up purchasing a SmartStopStart which has worked fabulously. For the JT I hope to get a Tazer JL, I say hope because I hope it will work properly on the JT. It has some additional useful features.

In 4-low ESS is disabled. And if you are off-roading in 4-high, auto trans, and attempt to climb a hill or rock, the traction control systems try to "help" you, by cutting power output. There was a video or write-up somewhere on this.

Opinions...
Personally I don't care for it. Thankfully on the 18 WK2, it's defeatable.
Just north of the gear selector next to the other 6 buttons and right in the middle.
So I can give it the middle finger before shifting out of park.
Not interested in exercising my starter over and over in stop and go traffic.
Wondering if it's going to be defeatable like this in the JT?
I think I had heard it was going to be a mandatory non-defeatable feature in the future.
Any thoughts?
I love it. It's perfectly logical...why do you want to burn fuel (money) while you're not moving?

My ESS system had a fault and stopped working for a couple of months at the end of last year. When I look at my Fuelly.com data, it's obvious where the ESS system wasn't working. My fuel economy trend line has a dip i it during those weeks. When I got the Jeep back in December, my fuel economy went back up to normal again.

ESS does exactly what they said it would do, it saves fuel.

I've driven many rental cars that had it, and my GC has it but I just couldn't get used to it so I disabled it. But I think I might give it another try w/ the JT diesel. Probably save me between $3-400 per year if I can get over that panic feeling of the engine dying at each stop :surprised: :giggle:

I have said this before, but then again this whole thread is a repeat so here goes again. I am getting the m/t which makes me even more excited for the ESS. As I understand it, ESS won't kick in as long as you are holding the clutch pedal down. So bumper to bumper traffic, no ESS. In order for ESS to work, you have to take it out of gear and then release the clutch pedal. I translate this to mean, I control when ESS engages and when it doesn't. I plan on leaving it on and using it for stop lights, but maybe not those "optional rolling stop signs".

you could also just hit the disable button when in bumper to bumper traffic.

Yep, this is true.

Just for those reading who may not know...you're not supposed to hold the clutch pedal down the entire time you're sitting at traffic signals anyhow. That's hard on the throwout bearing and clutch fork.

I know this is true, but I have owned 3 m/t. Sold my YJ at 155k miles, 100% original clutch. Replaced the slave and master cylinder on my Ranger at 165k miles. My XJ I bought with 186k miles so I don't know how it was treated but I did machine the fly wheel and replace the actual clutch. Never have I had a problem with a throwout bearing. So....

They say, don't knock it before you try it... so try it...

If you want to knock it after trying it, the free way is to just be disciplined and push the button when you don't want it on.

The lazy way is get a SmartStopStart for like $130 (I found a discount code on a forum when I bought the one for the Grand Cherokee, I paid $110 for it) or get a Tazer for varying costs...

Again, contentious issue lol but there are options...

I’ve heard some have disabled theirs by putting a trailer plug in, which the vehicle thinks you are towing and cuts it off.

Just hearing a car just off and turn back on next to me is annoying, cant imagine actually driving one that does it. Id definitely shut it off every time.

I had it on a rental car once...wasn't an immediate fan. Kept thinking the vehicle had died, I wanted to re-hit the starter button. LOL! Like all things, once I got used to it, I forgot all about it.

I just test drove a JL Rubicon with 4 cyl. Did that have the ESS and etorque? I assume yes?

Silly question, but the sales guy was awful.
