Update from my dealership as of 6:50am today -

The ETA for the Trailer brake controller part number 82215652 has been changed to April 20 of this year.
Well looks like Redaric it is for me. Just too far away, and we have already been given dates in the past that have come and gone.

HOLY CHIT!!

Any idea when new JTs will be delivered with them installed? Similar time frame?
Honestly no clue. This can has been kicked down the road so many times I personally have little or no faith the April time frame can be counted on.

I've been waiting to order so I can have it installed at the factory. If I'm waiting until April I might as well see what the 2021's change at that point. It sure seems like the 2020 JT may never get one.

More likely is that I will just order and worry about the controller if I ever actually need one.

Perhaps they will able to install in new units before trying to meet the demand of sold customers.

I wonder if a trailer brake controller was part of the truck's original tow rating certification. It would make the rating suspect from a legal standpoint, I'd think. Probably the words 'as properly equipped' were used at the time. Well, it isn't properly equipped upon delivery, in my opinion. Subsequently, I wonder how the truck would rate without it?

I'm not a lawyer. You would have to look at what federal transportation guidelines go into tow ratings and certifications.

Based upon a cursory search on the topic, it looks like the government doesn't have a law or regulation on what it takes to determine a tow rating. For a while manufacturers were just putting on values. The closest I could find is SAE J2807: "Performance Requirements for Determining Tow-Vehicle Gross Combination Weight Rating and Trailer Weight Rating.", which "establishes minimum performance criteria at GCWR and calculation methodology to determine tow-vehicle TWR for passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles and trucks. This includes all vehicles up to 14000 lb GVWR."
https://www.sae.org/standards/content/j2807_201602/
https://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/features/no-go-for-standardized-tow-ratings.html

Jalopnik, the folks who wrote the article explaining the JT's towing capability, have an article on the topic
https://jalopnik.com/what-is-sae-j2807-what-does-it-mean-for-trucks-1593305929

And interesting to note is going back to that "150lb driver allowance" for payload/towing considerations. The article states
"It assumes there is both a driver and passenger in the vehicle, each weighing 150 pounds;"

I'm too fat to achieve my max tow capacity but I at least fit in the payload range.

Welp, that's it. I'm ordering the Redarc and harness. It's B.S. that Jeep continues to show pictures of and advertise an option that hasn't been available since day 1 and nine months later still has no ETA.

I guess I'll get the Tow Pro Elite with the Tekonsha harness and Redarc adapter. Total will be $250 which sucks but likely will still be cheaper than the mythical Mopar unit.

Do you know anything about the Tekonsha 90250 Prodigy RF Electronic Brake Control? Good/Bad? TFLTruck did a test on it and gave it thumbs up.

If you want to save a few bucks, the Redarc Ram harness and swap the blue/black wires. took me 2 minutes tops and saves on that ridiculously priced Tekonsha to Redarc adapter harness. It has the diode in it just like the Tekonsha one too, I checked it out with my meter when installing.

Was the wire swap just a simple pull, or did it require re-soldering?

Probably release the finger or catch in the connector, remove, reinsert into other holes. Guess based on hundreds of connectors I've build and modified. Most pins and socket press into the shell and can be released - unless these are those really small sealed connectors.

Will be interesting to see how he really did it - I have to tow before April - this really sucks.
