maybe because it's a liquid, and even if it pools for a second on the door, it'll drip its way through no matter what

I use Amsoil. When I go to the fuel station I fill a 5 oz bottle and pour it in right before filling.
The open fuel filler is a connivence for those who chose to do the mod. I doubt anyone who has done it wishes they had not.

Hey all. Late to the party but new to the Gladiator Ecodiesel. I just pulled the guts out of my fuel fill neck and wanted to share an easy way to do it.

I started by trying to push in the tabs but couldn't access the top one well enough to push it in. So I tried something different.

I found a pair of wire stripper pliers that when opened, would fit between the ribs inside the filler neck. I could get enough leverage on the pliers handles to twist the plastic fill assembly to disengage the 2 tabs. Then the assembly pulled right out.

Once out you can access the 3 tabs that hold the trap door assembly on the housing and pop it off the bottom.

Once it's off, pop the top piece back in the metal fill neck and you're done.

This is basically accomplishing the same thing as trying to turn it with channel locks, but less chance of a slip and scratched paint.
I grabbed channel locks and rotated from the outside.


However, I was unable to pull it out. What am I missing?

There is an o-ring on the outside of the plastic part so it's not a loose fit after rotating. Rotate it a quarter turn then turn it back and forth slightly while pulling outward on it. As shown in the video you need to work it out past the o-ring before you can easily pull it out by hand.

I can attest that this modification is as easy as shown in the video. It literally took me 3 minutes from start to finish to get it done.
Thanks for posting it, I appreciate it!,

I’ve had my diesel for a year. I use Hot Shots at every fill up and have no issue adding it with the restrictor in place.
My main reason for removing it is to make it easier to refuel from my Scepter gas cans without having to use the funnel on long trips in the middle of nowhere.

I doubt anyone who has done it wishes they had not.
I haven't done it because I live in the great state of NJ where we don't pump our own fuel and I had two attendants in my first year of ownership attempt to put gas in it. I caught both of them before they attempted because I always make sure they grab the right one, but in the off chance I don't watch it's an extra fail safe for me.

That said, I have no issues getting EDT in my tank using the squeeze bottle I use just pouring it on the flap so don't really feel the need to remove it (unless you regularly use truck pumps).

I tried to remove the damn thing again the other day. Same results. It's still in the neck.

I removed most of the plastic nubs so that i can insert and remove it "any time". I think i'll keep it in there to do its stated job of preventing the wrong pump from going in, but i can wedge it in and out with my fingers now if i find myself at a truck stop or with some other filler problem. The rubber gasket does most of the job of holding it in place. What's left of my nubs does the rest of the job. But I don't have much nub left to snap into the slots.
Yesterday this was wonderful. There were lines for every pump 4 cars deep at the lowest price station in the state (CO 119 and I-25). But, the big rig pumps were open. So i pulled it in, removed the insert, fillerd up, and put the insert back in place. To be clear, it was tough to pull out, tougher than when I first practiced it in my warm garage. But not too tough for my multitool to grab and yank.

The diesel Jettas have this annoying feature too. It was more of a vent tube that works well for gasoline but not for diesel. My tractor also has this strainer in the filler neck. I don't have the 3.0 but I feel you pain.

I've had diesel trucks in the past and at least in the midwest it seems the chances of a station not having an auto-diesel pump (small nozzle) is very high. In fact my last fill-up was at a busy station right off the interstate and it only had large nozzle pumps. I just don't want to be in a situation where I need fuel and can't pump it because I can't fit the nozzle in the filler neck.

My filler neck still won't move. Think I'm going to have to remove the whole assembly to remove the stupid piece.

I got the one on my Gladiator to twist then pull out, but I can't seem to get the one on the Wrangler to pop loose. The whole upper neck twist, not just the piece that comes out. But I haven't tried it in awhile.
The wife drives the Wrangler and will let others fill it for her, so not sure if I want to risk a non attentive attendant fill it with the wrong fuel. I've already had a few freak when I started to add diesel instead of gasoline.

I stuck a wrench down the throat of the fill neck, then twisted the wrench using a pair of pliers. It took a bit of leverage before it popped and spun.

Not sure if there was ever a change in design or sealing of the fill neck to the rubber tube? Im swapping inner fenders and was trying to pull the whole thing to access it (channel lock method did not work) but the rubber won't budge from the fill neck at all. i ran a pick around the top part after loosening the hose clamp. i've tried to twist the rubber off the metal and it won't budge. it's as if it's sealed together.....

not sure if anyone else has ever encountered this?
