Hi everyone I know there is tons of post about this already. My goal was to help anyone else out from ever being stranded or screwing up a vacation again. As you know my JT was in the Shop for several months with me being stranded in Texas.(Search posts if you want the details). Fast forward to present time I still love this dang truck makes me smile every time I see it. my wife got to the point on road trips where she's like let's see if it breaks.

Truck Details just to for reference. 3.5 inch lift, 37 inch mud terrains, after marker Front bumper winch combo, bed cover, loaded bed with molle panels, I always carry tools, and full size badlands off road jack. 15000 miles, oil life was at 38 percent I change my oil at 5000 miles. temps running 65-90F, winds 20-30 gusts to 50MPH. Opti-Lube XPD every fill up.

I was driving back from Texas to New Mexico head winds blowing like crazy look at pics and videos several brown outs. I have the Banks Idash, Jscan app on my phone to monitor my temps, DPF soot level, Regans. I was driving about 70-85 MPH pushing it hard engine load at 100 and CEL dash lights up as a lot of people have experienced vehicle starts to slow down lose of power won't let you push it above 3000RPM's. I pulled over over ran the codes on my Idash confirmed same exact ones that put my truck in the shop. Said exhaust service required I knew my DPF was only at 42% full at this point. So I cleared all the codes with my Idash started my truck and everything was back to normal full power. This is the point I said F it I'm going to make this happen again over and over to test the limits, or it will break and burn down. I was able to get it to light up the dash and CEL come on 4 separate times to test how many ways I can fix it and try to figure out the trigger points. I was able to clear the codes via JScan app also. NOTE : handheld code reader didn't want to clear codes all the way and left truck under powered.

Lessons Learned-
1. Keep oil temps under 246F to prevent CEL and dash light up and error codes. I was able to do this after hours of messing around I seat my Alerts on my IDASH and JSCAN to trigger at 240F the alerts qued me to let off the gas a little.
2. Keep Coolant temps under 260F. Again I set my Idash and Jscan to set an alert. On this trip my coolant temp wasn't ever the problem.
3. My OCD kicked in after my first time being stranded I said it would never happen again without me knowing what's going on with my truck. Doesn't matter what you buy to monitor your levels but get something to help you trouble shoot. I can confirm Jscan app and Bluetooth OBD plug work, and also Banks Idash works to correct the codes and put you back on the road.
4. Slow down when you have New Mexico Head winds it puts a huge load on the motor.
5. After my testing of purposely making my CEL come on I didn't have any issues or anymore CEL come on after I set my parameters and let off the gas a little.

Sorry long winded and all over the place on this post but I was trying to recall a bunch of details to help anyone out with this motor. Pics and Videos below show the crazy winds we been having some gusts were in the 80's MPH. I know this isn't the end all fix but this worked for me. Prior to my first experience with it I would have taken it back to the dealer. after my Jeep Hush money I was able to buy some toys to help keep it out of the shop.

Safe travels hopes this keeps someone smiling.

Thanks, I guess the key is keep the Temps down below your thresholds and it will keep chugging.
Thanks for this info.

Exactly KB. The Idash and Jscan are nice to monitor that. It’s also nice to be able to clear all the codes and be back on the road.

yes, anything over 80 with a little wind will spike oil temps. I was on a flat road doing 82ish with a little wind and my oil sat at 242. Add 2mph and it goes to 244.

The oil heat exchanger can't handle sustained loads.

Rharr very true which is very unfortunate. I can run this truck on sand dunes all day doing doughnuts and what not doesn't over heat or CEL, but wind and 85 haha whole other ball game. I have had my Lights come on one time and I took it to the dealer was out of a truck for several months. hence why I am sharing how to get back on the road and being happy with this JT.

When you were derating, do you know what elevation you were at?

Elevations up and around where your truck was limping through @ 5000 ft + ?

(edit) pulled the photos, uploading was slow

Currently on trip from TN to UT and got the Exhaust System Service Required message at the OK / TX border and it derated. Got to the next exit but my Bluetooth OBD2 and Gateway Bypass Cable were at home, so no way to do a forced regen. So we found a place to camp for the night.

Next morning (Tuesday) took Route 66 & I40 Service Roads to the Jeep Dealer in Amarillo. They checked it and found no issues so they did a forced regen.

Got back on the road and halfway to Albuquerque it did it again. I had already ordered a BluetyOBD2 and Bypass Cable from Amazon for pickup in St. George, so I cancelled that and reordered for pickup in Albuquerque.

Got to a Campground we had been to before on the East side of Albuquerque Tuesday night and picked up the Amazon package around 1:00pm Wednesday.

Cleared the codes using my JScan app and got back on the road. Experienced strong headwinds and scattered storms through NM, but followed Jtfire35 Lessons Learned and made sure to keep the oil temp below 246F and coolant temp below 260F and made it to Valley of the Gods to camp with no issues.

We are loaded heavy and both occasions happened when my wife was driving. (She was driving hard wanting to get there ASAP). I showed her how to monitor the oil temp (coolant temp has not been an issue) and what to do to keep it below 246F.

Oil temp has climbed to 246F when climbing grades, but between slowing down or reaching the peak as it hits 246, we have been able to keep under as much as possible.

We’ll be lighter on the return to TN which will help. My question for Jtfire35 is how long does the oil temp need to be at 246F or above for it to trigger CEL / Exhaust Service?

Glad It helped Tennessee!! haha Yeah NM winds will get you every time. To answer your question it varies the true derate temps I have seen have been 250,252,246 this is due to assuming the gauge is trying to catch up to the actual temps. Only thing I can tell you if you don't let off the throttle or cruise control at any of these temps after about 30-60 seconds it will derate at least on my truck is how it was. I purposely pushed it and derated it several times to make sure I could clear it. Once you let off the pedal it hasn't derated on me yet, and that's a simple as going from 80 percent load to 75 percent load. This passed week I caught the temps up at 249 on a hard climb up to Santa Fe. released the petal and she climbed right back down and no derate.

Thanks for the additional info and I plan to keep an eye on the oil temp on the way back to TN next week and back off the throttle when the temp is climbing to that 246 mark.

Jumped on I15 heading north from Toquerville for a few miles this afternoon and the grade pushed the oil temps past 246, so I dropped in behind some Semi’s that were struggling with the climb and got the temps down.

Yeah not a problem. Yeah that’s exactly it. Depending on the grade and ambient temp I have to play that game. I’m on 37’s MT and I also have the decked system and a go fast camper. I tend to push it to fast haha I can cruise going 85. On climbs I drop back to 70-75.

Jtfie35, I noticed in your original post that you run Opti-Lube XPD with every fillup. I run Opti-Lube XPD in the winter when the temps are low. But the rest of the time I run a mix of Opti-Lube XL (3 oz) and Opti-Lube Summer Lube + (1 oz) that I premix into some Opti-Lube 4 oz bottles.

I found I getter better mileage running the mix over the XPD and it’s way cheaper.

When it derated the second time on the way to Albuquerque, I got a bottle of Rislone 4774 in Santa Rosa and added it to the half a tank of fuel I had. I followed the instructions of running in a lower gear for 20 to 30 miles while working our way down Route 66.

I filled up when I got down to a 1/4 tank and the Rislone seemed to help because it began to let me run higher mph (70+) at times on the way to the campground east of Albuquerque even with the Exhaust System Service required code still on.

Got the idea of trying the Rislone from MaximusTX from another post in the forum about the Exhaust System Service required message.

I’ll give that mix a shot for sure. Even better about saving money ahha. Cause I spend it everywhere else on this thing. Weight lose diet next month and then I can put my 40’s on. Nice looking rig! I do use the rislone DPF clean and Rislone Def Treatment . I will have to look at the 4774.
