I've never had the overflow problem. I did have a problem when I tried to put in more fuel after the auto shutoff. I can get about a third of a gallon in after shutoff. I could get up to a gallon and a half with my diesel Silverado. I always fill on the slowest setting. I did that with the diesel to keep foaming at a minimum to get the maximum amount of fuel in the tank.

I've learned with my '17 Trailhawk and continue with my Gladiator to stop when the auto shutoff stops the gas. If I try and top-off after the auto shutoff to hit a nice round multiple of $0.25 I always run the risk of a burp of a bit of gas.
Each vehicle I've ever owned has been different - some I can get another half gallon in with no effort, no problem, some I don't dare even try. I decided to "see what the JT would do to me" and gave it another short shot - and decided by sound and such - naw, when it's done it's done.
From the sound I assumed I wasn't going to get enough more in to make it worth a bath.
Depending on how fast you are filling there can be gas slop back like a bounce-back on some vehicles. one of my cars if I slow it way down near the end I can really top it off full, but if I let it go fast until it shuts off I get a "bounce" coming back, a wet hand.
I guess each has their personality.
No problem "so far"..........

Filled up today, no issues (other than I can't seem to get the damn tank full)
Filled slow or fast and what was gauge reading when it stopped?

Filled fast for the first 5 gallons but then realized it was fast flow so slowed it down. Started filling with an estimated 40mi left on the trip reader (but low fuel light didn't come on like it was supposed to - 18-20mpg, means with 40mi left there would be 2gal remaining which is when the fuel light is supposed to come on). Gauge reading went to full when it stopped. Filled 18.05gal. Usually when it says 40mi remaining I've gotten 18.5gal in with the usual slow flow. I was able to squeeze in another 1.5gal last time with letting it rest for 30 seconds and pushing fuel (at which point it did over flow just a little but went back down, none spilled out, did this in 0.25-0.5gal increments to get 1.5gal)

Your tank is as full as it's designed to get. The problem is you're trying to correlate an inaccurate gauge, and the computer's range estimation, with a very accurate dispenser measurement.

Unless you run the tank dry, you will not get 22 gallons of fuel into it. The gauge is likely rigged to keep you from running the tank dry. My understanding is that running it that low is very hard on the fuel pump. I would guess that FCA is trying to avoid changing a lot of fuel pumps under warranty.

Adjust your expectations, and don't worry about how much is actually going into the tank. Fill it on the slow setting, and know that when the auto shutoff kicks in, the tank is full. I know that I can get about 400 miles on a full tank, but don't try to do it. I fill up when the gauge shows between 1/4 and 1/2 full, and know that I have a margin for safety, just in case.

And that is exactly what I will be doing once I am satisfied I'm not having a faulty fuel tank sensor. The fuel light should come on at 2gal remaining. When I fill up when the light comes on (and then some just to err on the side of caution against it pre-maturely indicating due to angle of incline, temperature, etc.) I expect to fill 20gal, not 18gal. Those 2gal is a difference of 30mi on my tank. If/when it comes down to that being an important factor in my trip, I need to know what is actually in my fuel tank.

I also appreciate the warning on the fuel pump. I think I broke my Honda's fuel pump by repeatedly running the tank low. So I am keenly aware of avoiding that with the JT. I've only gotten the tank low once, at around 1800 miles, and by my calculations it still had a gallon of fuel in it.

Yeah, I agree.

I'm not getting why guys feel the need to run the fuel tank down to the last drop, or risk wheeling around with less than a 1/4 tank full (?!).

My 'fuel tank policy' for at least 30-yrs on a variety of vehicles, including several in the Jeep line, has been to never let the fuel tank get below 1/4 full, and more typically, I'll fill up when the fuel needle hits the 1/2 way line.

Call me a paranoid veteran of too many gas-supply shortages, but I never want to be caught with less than a nearly full tank when the next (unannounced) fuel crisis hits.

Which is why I also keep some amount of fresh gas in the garage and am well stocked on Stabil.

YMMV.

Having driven a TJ many years, I’ve been conditioned to do the same ;)

Read this thread and thought. Do these people not know how to fill a gas tank? I've had mine for a week now. 1k miles and never had an burp....until yesterday. Quater tank left, inserted all the way as I've normally done with the fills. It wasn't a burp. This thing went full porcelain God on me. Side of the truck, my shoes. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! Pulled the noze out a bit and started pumping slower (yeah baby) It freaking did it again!!!

Conclusion. It's only happened once. So I'm willing to blame the pump. Yes, black assault pump is to blame.....Until next time.

Since I work with one of the busiest Search and Rescue groups in the country, I always keep my tank full and usually fill up on every trip to town. I doubt that I've driven home with less than 2/3 of a tank in the last 28 years. I habitually set the pump on the slowest fill rate and never tried to put in more gas after the auto shutoff until a few weeks ago when it shut off before it should have done so. I live about 30 miles outside of town. I normally burn about 3 gallons of gas on a round trip. The pump recently started shutting off after 1.5 gallons...hardly worth the stop at the gas station. When I try to add more, it spits it up...even if I wait a minute or more. Unless I've started getting 40 mpg with the Gladiator, something is not right.

I recall some folks on the JK forum having this issue and had their gas tanks replaced

It has happened the last 5 times I have filled up.
Tank is always under 1/4 when filling.
No topping off, pump shuts off and gas shoots out.
Ive tried all three notches on the pump handle, makes no difference.
It may be a colder weather thing? Ive had mine since May and had no issues until the last couple months.

Screw my paint I guess...

I mentioned this a few pages ago. The recall, at least with my 2007 JKUR back in the day, was to replace the vent line to a larger one. Zero issues after that.
