But, the Gladiator is already rated for almost 8,000 pounds. another 2k isn't all that much add'l weight.

And you have to figure that FCA made the weight rating lower than what it could actually tow for liability reasons.
You won’t be able to cool the truck at that weight. There was a great article about how hard they worked on cooling the JT. It was hard. Not enough frontal area.

Currently cooling is the limiting factor, it’s also the reason the diesel will tow less not more. From the article I read your asking everything from the truck to meet the tow rating for SAE standards. It’s one of the reasons the tire size was determined for the sport with max tow.

Does anyone know what heavy duty engine cooling is that you get with the max tow. I'm assuming and larger transmission cooler. But is there anything else?

So, for those interested I'm shooting a video this coming weekend on the differences between a Gladiator with HD cooling and a Gladiator with zero cooling or towing add-ons. We'll get to the bottom of this.

I know there's a 850w fan and a 240 amp alternator to power it, but I'd love to know if there are differences in the coolers mounted in the grille on tow package/Max Tow package/non-tow package trucks. Mine has at least 4 different coolers mounted up there. I assume one is trans, one A/C condenser, one radiator. What's the 4th one? Oil cooler?

Somebody should dig into this.
Power steering cooler I believe.

I looked over my Max Tow a little closer tonight. There are actually only 3 coolers, not 4. As for the power steering, the lines coming from the steering pump run from driver side to passenger side, and terminate at the electric motor. There is then a single line from the motor to the hydraulic fluid reservoir. None of the lines appear to run through a cooler. What is concerning is that both lines are routed in a fashion that makes them very vulnerable to damage if rock crawling or if involved in a fender bender.

I think on the Rubi the lines are under the front skid - maybe just the Rubi's got a PS cooler? (or maybe I'm misremembering)

I'll take a look this weekend but I think I remember the lines being tucked up under the front skid on the rubi when I installed my winch.

Completed the heavy duty cooling video tonight. It should be up on my channel later on.

Those of you who didn't order any towing package at all will be pleased to know that if you want the factory towing package, there are only three parts you'll need to order. I forgot to mention in the video that the alternator is higher output on the towing package trucks.

#1 they have electric power steering. A box not a rack and pinion.
#2 the max tow has 4:10 gears, a 8 speed automatic trans. and cooler, stronger fan, bigger alternator, and body colored fender flares?? That’s how you get the 7K towing. The $250 tow package gives you a bigger alt, stronger fan, 3:73 gears and a 4K tow limit. Neither can get the brake controller at this time since they are a couple months out. You can’t even get it for the new Rams at this time.
#3 yo would have to beef up about everything you can think of to pull that 10,000 pounds and then you’d kill the engine and stress to frame.
Your lucky you got 7K towing. Hook onto something that weighs 7500# and let me know how it went.
IMHO

Summary: There are three things you get if you order the towing package that you do NOT get if you just take the standard class II setup: 240 amp alternator, 850 watt engine fan, and a class IV receiver hitch that actually has a receiver tube rather than simply a ball plate.

So, a guy without the towing package could order those three items if he really wanted to and upgrade his truck to the factory towing package, although doing so after the fact would cost a lot more than the $250 the factory charges for the option currently.

True, HYBRID electric/hydraulic steering. Still has a steering box. Still has a hydraulic fluid reservoir. Just adds electric assist to the mix. But what's that got to do with "heavy duty cooling"?

The fenders are not body colored. They're "molded in color", in other words the fender is actually molded in the grey color, rather than being painted like the fenders on Overland.

10,000 lbs? I sure as heck ain't. But the engine is rated 7,730 lbs. max towing in the Ram trucks and those trucks go through torture testing so I'm not worried about the driveline. I'd only be worried about stopping the load in a panic situation.
