If this thread's done anything, it's outed the under 30 crowd.
You know Millennials are hitting 40, right? Some of us have retired from the military already.

I know people under 30 who have driven more different types of vehicles than most people will see in 100 years, and people over 80 who know that D makes it go forward, R makes it go backwards, and P makes its stop, and that’s all they’ll ever know. Both are totally acceptable ways to live a life.

Ad hominem attacks don’t solve an argument, they just tell everyone you’ve run out of useful things to say.

Also, no one is right in this argument. It’s a shifter, it really doesn’t matter which way it goes as long as it’s consistent from one ignition cycle to the next. If you don’t like the way it operates, change it. If you aren’t capable of changing it, find someone who can. If you can’t find someone, either live with it or buy a different vehicle. Arguing about it on the internet is never going to solve anything.

I saw the original post and have to agree, most automatics going all the way back to 60's you shift up to next gear not pull back. I remember way back a dual gate shifter that I think came with a towards rear shift pattern.

Chevy Camaro is the same:

And someone mentioned Hurst Dual Gate

But my RAM 1500 has a completely different set up:

However, Chrysler/Stellantis/Jeep/RAM seems to want follow Backwards Motor Works (BMW) with the TRX:

So who knows.... maybe they'll switch the gas pedal, and brake next... lol

Thank you for proving the point that there is no standard shifter design, and that trying to call one "backwards" is biased and being ignorant of reality. They're different, that's all. Why is there so much crying?

I remember when first toward you and down, second was forward and up and third was forward and down. Reverse was toward you and up. Who am I?
Three on the tree.

I got the 6 speed, first time I have had reverse in the top left, but didn’t take long to adjust and I appreciate the second overdrive.

Back up and forward down feels completely natural to me.

I'm just thankful that Jeep hasn't gone to rotary shifters in the Gladiator and Wrangler. I would be in hell. Hate them with a passion.
I second this!!!!!!!! I will take any shifter in any direction over a dial.
