Just had my oil changed with 0w20. Since I doubt this is a truck I will keep past warranty, I figured I will just go with what Jeep says to put in. I change my oil every 5K miles. I did it at 4K miles this time because I'm about to go on a trip and I'm at the end of the last oil change so I figured I would do it 1K miles early as opposed to after the 5K mile mark. Now my OCD is all messed up because I was on the every 5K mile mark and now I have 9K miles on the truck. Oh well I have fresh oil and filter with newly rotated tires.

I am going to stick with Torco 5-30 full synthetic. Went to Moab and got 18 MPG. No issues. yet.

I am sure people will say i am wasting my money, or that i am ruining my vehicle. But, my 2018 JLUR went 156k miles without any engine issues (aside from the filter housing).

My 2023 Gladiator Mojave is at 40k trouble free miles too..

I run 5w30 full synthetic and change it every 3k miles. I add in zddp zinc each change.

My drivetrain is quiet, not rattles, no chatter, and the motor runs smooth and clean.

Oil changes cost me about 30.00 every 3k miles, but in these "questionable" engines, i do feel like this makes a difference.

time will tell if this is as reliable as the 18.

Edit: I know that a lot of people on here have posted the generational changes from the early non vvt and non vvl (or combined) engines. But the 3.6 in the current generation is used in other global markets and calls for 5w20 or 5w30 depending on region. The Axles also call for 90w140 from Dana's site and the ZF lifetime transmission fluid according to ZF is for 60k miles.. Which to me at least means it's highly likely CAFE is who is dictating the oil numbers, if not you would think they would be identical globally.

The 5w is for WINTER, it means nothing else. Once the engine is running, up to operating temp - it's the 2nd number that counts. So 5w20 is the same under operating conditions as 0w20.

ZF lifetime transmission fluid according to ZF is for 60k miles.
I have no clue where you got that, but no - it says that effectively it doesn't need changed unless the transmission is otherwise worked on or serviced. I've posted that document straight from ZF multiple times.

Zinc? OMG - that's so old-school and people abuse the shit out of that nonsense. Modern oils - meaning in the last 25 or so years, have been formulated where ZDDP has been replaced with other chemistry. Too much ZDDP is actually harmful.

The only thing you have proven is that you have not caused catastrophic damage with your methods - not that it's any better.

Think of it this way - the majority of all 3.6 engine owners do NOT change their own oil, most go by the book - and the vast majority have no issues with the factory recommendations.
6.4 MILLION of the PUG engine alone.
You can bet then that millions of them have used only the recommended oil and have gone over 100,000 miles on that recommendation.

**Yeah, you've proven only that you aren't causing catastrophic damage, nothing else at all has been proven or indicated.**

We've had several - and only ever used the recommended oil - NO clatter, no noise, valve train is quiet and the engines idle smooth and quiet.

We've never had engine problems with ANY Jeep we've ever owned, including all of the 3.6 variations. Only ever used the recommended oil and NO additives.

I'll take that a bit farther - I've never ever added zinc or ANY oil additives to any of the engines I've built - including with stronger valve springs and more radical cams. I built a 1970 390 in a Javelin I had with a comp xtreme energy cam - I just checked in with the guy I sold the car to 6 years ago - he drives it around, to shows and more and it's still just fine. I've got Comp cams in the 2 cars I still have, NO zinc added, no additives, cams and lifters are fine. ZDDP is almost like some cult thing these days - more myth than facts out there about it.
(that car I sold is down in Texas - the HEAT of texas with that high-perf 390, doing just fine)

The manufacturer, ZF, states that the fluid and filter should be changed, depending on use between 50-75K miles.

Here is a video showing multiple ZF sources stating that the fluid IS NOT a lifetime fluid…
