yes they are Maxxis AT 40x13.50x20 and i enjoy their on and off road manners. they are my second set. i put 40k on the first. the lowest price for these hides is at walmart.com! who would have guessed.
when i did the build i installed jeep's heavy hitch. it is compatible with the new bumper.
What’s this ā€œjeeps heavy duty hitchā€ you mentioned?

If I recall, Matt from Ozark Overland had 5.13's with 37" tires and when he did the amw 5.7 swap, he went back down to 4.56 gears and was happy he did after driving it. I wonder if you'd be better with 3.73 gears?
I thought they kept his 4.88s in there as he had some issues with the 5.13s deteriorating on him in the housing a while before he had the swap done.

I personally would go to 4.88 with 37-38ā€ as it climbs better. Most of the ā€œgoodā€ trails around here you have significant elevation changes to get to so it’s just easier on the engine transmission on the way to/from the trailhead. Having the 6.4 you won’t have to worry as much but still a consideration if this isn’t going to be a full blown trailer queen.

I feel pretty strongly based on the math that the 5.13 with a 40" tire should be good at highway speeds, the 40's will roll over obstacles mo-betterer. and the 6.4 with that crazy-good torque curve will work everywhere.
Besides, 40's are cheaper, starts me off with a zero-mile set of rubber, and I can do it myself.

For the spare, check with Extrusion Overland.(sp) I know they have developed a spare tire rack to mount like you were thinking about on a slide out inside the bed cap. Not sure if it’s specific to their rack or not though. Doesn’t hurt to check.

And you can sell your used 37s and get some money back

If you insist on carrying a spare, I love your tail gate option you found.
I stopped running a spare when I went to 40s, I carry a plug kit and a GlueTread kit.

I can attest to the GlueTread kit working as described. I cut a month old 42" tire on the sidewall at Windrock and with sanding (a whole lot of sanding to make it smooth), it did adhere to the sidewall and held air from Oak Ridge to near Nashville where I live.

Technically it still holds air, but it sits at my friend's shop as the spare for anyone who needs it.

I bought a new GlueTread setup as soon as I got home, added a Dremel to my tool kit so I can make the sanding easier next time... The hard part was the letters where the particular gash was.

That's impressive!
And real-world experience.
So, I have wanted to delete the spare, but it just seems odd, for lack of a better word, not to have one. But when getting to the huge tire sizes, carrying a 130-pound spare that gobbles up precious space becomes a real factor.
I ordered that glue tread kit as soon as I read about it, almost a week ago. It will be a permanent part of my kit from now on.
I also like that tailgate replacement, but...
It will cost a couple of thousand. It will add more weight and mess with the center of gravity. I don't like any of those factors...

I didnt learn about glue tread until the end of last year, gave a pack for a secret santa gift and also santa had to give me one too haha. Even though I have added it to my offroad gear, I still havent pulled the spare from under the bed. Maybe soon tho.

I don’t wheel without a full sized spare on a matching wheel. I’m leery letting my wife wheel hers with a same sized spare on a factory spare wheel. I’ve seen way too many wheels get slagged on trails not to. Doesn’t matter what tires you run there’s a rock out there with its name on it. Broken beads are no problem but slashed sidewalks or bent steel rims are a day ender for me. That’s when I route to an exit. Doesn’t help that we both have different bolt patterns and tire sizes.

I run the same plus GlueTread and plug kit. 2 is 1 and 1 is none as they say.
