In normal times I'd bitch harder and impulse buy it now but it's 2020 so "let's wait a few more months" gets a more sympathetic ear.

It sounds like the mature decision is Sport S with Max Tow Package (and sadly, automatic transmission) and save the cash and see what I really want to buy.

It sounds like the mature decision really is going to lead to owning a stock Sport S with Max Tow Package (and sadly automatic transmission) with no saved cash and more flower beds or something.

You’ll probably want at least to eventually upgrade to 33s once the stock tires wear out. I’ve got a Max Tow and I’m upgrading to 33s now, but that’s the extent of any upgrades not funded by Christmas or birthday gifts.

Not that I expect to get it all, but my Christmas list includes rubber mats, weathertech bed liner, mopar grab handles, a modestly priced bumper, etc.

My Sport S on 33s looks great. I am a giant manual trans snob, but I will admit wheeling with the auto stick is pretty easy and gives you lots of flexibility.

Sport and sink money into it if you do not anticipate parting with the rig. I don't see what in the world would cost $15k in upgrades.

Lockers: $2500
Lift: $3k

Now, I don't know if you'd want the transfer case specific to the rubicon or mojave or how much that would cost, or the cost of an electronic swaybar disconnect.
Tires and wheels are the next chunk of change I'd add to this list.

I would not be completely set on the max tow, depending on how it will be used. Hear me out. From what I have read the axle width is 3" more. (correct me if I am wrong those of you with it). So if you do not plan to lift it the extra width will most likely not be noticeable. With the max tow you also get the 4.10s. So again depending on what you want to upgrade to this might or might not matter. The actual axle is the same on all JTs. So if you plan on getting 37s or up you will most likely be upgrading the gears no matter what you start with. If you plan to stay in the 33-35 range the 4.10s will be an improvement over the 3.73 in the non max tow.

I went with the Sport S with tow package and added the rubicon take-off suspension and will have 1.5" and 3/4" spacers put in soon. This will get me the 35-37 range for tires. I will have to change gears to what seems like 4.88 at least. I do not rock crawl or anything super technical so this fits what I need. Quite a bit cheaper to go this route too.

I've been considering this seriously for like a month now and I've gotten better info from this thread then all the web searching so far.

The only major disappointment is knowing I can't get a manual transmission and be happy. Maybe the era is finally dead for real this time.

What about engines? Am I going to regret not opting for the more fun diesel engine? I'm kind of going into this assuming the gas engine is better for me given potential usage but maybe I'm making the wrong assumptions. It's not like I'm looking to pull stuff around pretending like I'm an F-350.

I got a base sport (no need for power doors/windows or upgraded electronics)with:

Max Tow w/ limited slip (wider axles and better gears plus I plan on towing a travel trailer)
Aux switches (allows for easy future upgrades)
Bed liner (about the same price as aftermarket)
Slush mats (these were cool looking and I would have gotten Weather Tec if I hadn't gotten factory ones)
Hard top (wanted both and after market soft tops have lots of fun options)

Already added:
Steps from overland off of craigslist (needed for gf, otherwise would have gotten rock rails)
Decked system from member forum here
CMM mirror mounts for doors off driving
Voswitch mount for cell phone/gopro on dash

Plan to add:
Metal Rubicon front/rear bumpers
Rubicon take off bed guards
Winch
Onboard air
Mojave take off wheels/tires
Rubicon take off fenders
Sway bar disconnects
Front locker
Forward trail cam (gonna have to rig up input switch to toggle front/rear since I have 5" stereo)
Inverter/outlet in bed (want more power output then factory options provide)
Trailer brake controller
Heated seats (easy to diy not worth the oem price)
Probably a bunch more stuff...

So I went fairly basic from the factory with plans to gradually upgrade over time with take offs from higher trims and aftermarket parts.

Buy the Max Tow and then buy the Rubicon suspension from someone here who took them off with low miles. Seriously the way to go! Usually they are $300-500 for shocks, springs control arms, stabilizer links etc.. Stock 33's pop up too. Check the members marketplace.
I have the Rubi because of the lower gears and lockers, I anticipate pulling all sorts of things out of the snow like every other truck I have had.
I am super spoiled to have the heated seats (bad back) and extra things that I will never figure out. I have done a bit of off-roading at Rausch Creek and my only upgrade was Rusty's LCA skids which are a must! (did trail 11, Crawler Ridge and Crawling for Cops). Thinking about a set of 35's for some more trail options but maybe not even. I did add a Warn Evo 12S winch using a Warn plate and modifying the stock plastic bumper.
I have towed about 5,000 lbs. with no problem. Guessing that another 2,000 won't be a problem, just be smart about it.

If you are planning on hauling compost and towing the Mojave may not be the best choice due to its cargo and towing capacities being less.

Me personally, it would either be Sport S Max Tow or the Rubi for the wider axles.

I bought Rubi because at the time Max Tow was rarer than hens teeth.

With the supercharger, it has power like a full size. Added my own high dollar brake controller. Limited slip, tires, lift. It is the .25 ton I have had that does .5 ton truck work no-issue and then you can take its top off and get muddy. Max tow got me wide axles, 4.10s, winter package. Great starting point to paint my picture

If you wanna off-road and tow 5-7K, then get Sport S with Max Tow.

If you wanna off-road and tow under 5K, then Rubicon.

My .02
How did you figure that?? Rubicon will tow 7k without issues, expect sh1tty gas mileage in either model.

Just my opinion, no figuring involved.
The Rubi squats more with weight on it, for one thing.
