I have found that diesel fuel prices vary greatly, even block-to-block I have seen differences of $0.40-$0.50 per gallon. I use an app called 'Gasbuddy' to look for the best prices on fuel. Perhaps if you started using something like that on your phone it might help you focus on the task at hand instead of playing Pokémon ;)

Hey Ken...congrats on the new JT! You're gonna love it! Like others have said, you likely won't find this to be too much of a problem. You'll be so focused on enjoying your new truck that you won't forget and use the wrong fuel. However, IF you do screw it up and realize your mistake halfway through fueling, don't panic. First off, make sure you DO NOT start the vehicle AT ALL! Have it towed home (NOT THE DEALER-self explanatory) and drop the tank. FULLY drain and rinse (pain-in-the-ass) the tank and pump, re-install, fill with proper fuel and press on. As long as you haven't pulled gasoline into the fuel lines or through the fuel pump you should be okay. Of course, if you've already started the truck, it gets more complicated (and expensive) flushing fuel lines and such. This assumes you only ran it very briefly. If it runs for more than 10-30 seconds (30 sec would be a long time), you're likely screwed... :(

For the masses...did I miss anything?

Good luck!

OP - great perspective!

I will add that if gas ever gets put into my truck, it will be because my wife is using it and decides to fuel up. ?

We're going to have a serious training session when we get the Gladiator about exactly how to fuel the thing. She has never put diesel in a vehicle in her life, as she has never once in 15 years driven one of my full-size trucks. ?‍♂ She's already tried to claim the Jeep and we don't even have it yet! ?

In hospitals,we usually take a time out and make sure we have the right patient/right procedure etc.. Take a time out before you grab the nozzle.

You're not supposed to use your phone, or get in and out of the vehicle while fueling. What would there be to cause such a distraction that you don't stop what you're doing, and fill the tank with the wrong fuel?
What the hell am I supposed to do when getting gas?! Just stand there?

As far as cell phone use, etc. - anyone using a damned cell phone while doing anything important or risky - I have little sympathy.
The only problem with that is that it's often an innocent who gets what the cell phone user deserves. There's no text or call so important as to risk life and limb of yourself and others.
My wife will often say "is that your phone" and I'll say yeah, if it's important, they'll leave a message and I'll deal with it when I can pay attention. Why should I give only half of my attention to someone calling me? Don't they deserve my full attention?

People believe they can successfully "multitask" - and that's been proven over and over by legit university studies (major universities, I should add) to be laughable - and false.
You can't serve two masters at the same time. Talk and pay attention to the conversation, OR, pump fuel and pay attention to what you are doing.
My boss finally stopped using the term "multitasking" after I printed up big signs and banners that were the headlines from those studies proving it wasn't possible to do both jobs right.

I don't feel sorry for those one every week who screw up. Pay attention (and that comes from me - some would call that FUNNY as hell. When I got my fingers and thumb tangled in the table saw years ago - I didn't complain about the saw or any lack of features or safety equipment, I told the first responders I got what I deserved, whatever that may end up being)

On the positive side - GAS has a distinct SMELL/ODOR.
Diesel has a distinct smell/odor.
After a while muscle memory should rule - people have memories triggered, or set, based on smells and environmental factors. That should apply here, too.
Or go to Hobby Lobby and get a small bottle of the fluorescent orange paint and paint a bright orange D on the gas cap. Maybe paint one on the inside of the fuel door.
Like someone else said - a locking cap, anything to make you stop and work harder to get fuel in and give you time to come out of la-la land and do it right.

This country has become a nation of distractions and not thinking before acting. I have a medical excuse, but still, as I am aware of said condition, one could argue that awareness takes away at least part of the excuse.
I'd also likely not hire anyone who messed up putting fuel in a fork lift. If they can't pay attention when fueling up - how would they operate the bloody thing with only half their brain in gear?

Like when I cranked the starter in that rabbit without pushing the clutch - I got what I deserved - I wasn't thinking or paying attention. It may one day kill me - and I'll tell the guy at the gate - no excuse, I wasn't paying attention and using the abilities given me.

I'm ordering my EcoDiesel Rubicon on Thursday fully loaded then sending it to AEV for the AEV JT370 package. I know a guy at work that ruined a Jeep diesel engine with gas, he said it cost him 7000 dollars. At first I thought to myself how can someone make that mistake and it seemed sort of dumb. I mean diesel stations are usually green, it's obvious so how do people make the mistake?

So now that several people know I'm getting a Diesel all are sharing nightmare stories of smart people making dumb mistakes and it has my attention how this is happening or at least why are they not paying attention. I'm an engineer by degree, I get what happens mixing the two either way but perhaps I'm missing something. Is something that seems so simple that difficult?

Help me understand how not to make the mistake gas in diesel mistake. Do you have any reminder hacks, tips or tricks such as painting the fuel cap green? Do you only go to truck stops with high volume turn over?

Educate me how to never make a dumb mistake.

Thanks!
This is by no means a silly or dumb question, as it happens all the time, especially if you happen to have both a diesel and gas vehicle in the family.
Things become habit, routine, distracting. I admit, I have grabbed the wrong nozzle, but have luckily caught my self in time!
(I don’t know how your friend ruined his motor, usually they just won’t run well, until you get the gasoline out of the system)
I worked maintenance at a golf course, with an assortment of different fuel equipment, and every season, our poor mechanic had to deal with diesel in a gas vehicle.
All I can say, is try to pay attention!

When diesel prices were $5/gal, i fueled my 2.5 ton multifuel truck with half diesel and half gasoline. Just explained that I forgot what fuel it used so I put in half tank of each.

Last month, a buddy put in a few gallons of gas in his diesel truck (it happens to the best of us). We drained the tank, put in fresh diesel and poured the diesel/gas mix in my 2.5 ton truck.

II know a guy at work that ruined a Jeep diesel engine with gas . . .
My uncle once did the opposite (sort of) on purpose.

He had one on the 1960s GMC pickups with GM's early V6, the one that sort of galloped.

He was out in the boonies, and ran out of gas, but had some kerosene. It worked well enough for him to make it home.

Get a label maker and stick a DIESEL sticker on your gas diesel cap.

Rule of diesel fueling:
Step 1: Put only diesel in the tank
Step 2: Don't not put diesel in the tank
