I tow often
This says it all. Spring for the tow package. If you were just doing occasional light towing I'd say just install an aftermarket or OEM take-off receiver and a plug n play 4 pin wiring harness. But it sounds like you do a little more serious towing that would require a 7 pin harness. I don't know if anyone makes a 7 pin plug n play harness. So you would be looking at cutting and splicing. Which could lead to problems. Even adding the former mentioned you are looking at around $200. So another $345 to have it OEM and ready to go is worth it.

Just my take

Hi All, I am also configurating my Mojave for 2022 purchase...New to towing so please excuse me for my ignorance...I will be towing relatively light loads (but a few hundred bucks is not an issue for me so i prefer to go factory/warrenty).

I do plan to get the Tow package...What else do I need to add to this to actully be able to tow. For example, i see no mention of the "Ball mount", "pin and clip", or "trailer break control" in the package description of the 2022 order sheet. Are these things I need to add after market? (anything else I need to consider?)

Thanks in advance!

You will need at minimum a ball mount. Invest a few bucks in a locking pin. You only need a TBC if what you are towing has brakes. If you are only towing a light trailer that requires a 4 pin then a TBC isn't necessary.

Yes.
You will need the insert for the hitch and ball. Depending on the weight of the trailer you will also need a “brake” controller and a weight distribution hitch (WDH). Sway control is recommended and inexpensive.
Lastly to the OP, you figure going without the tow package and doing some partial add ones will save you money?
Wait until you start looking at everything else you need/want for this.
The JT is not a way to save a few hundred bucks, it will beg you to modify it weekly. ?

I should have said "I tow a lot. BUT its never more than 3000 lbs.

For what its worth, you can get a class 3 receiver hitch for under $200 at e-Trailer or Hidden hitch, and would take a couple of hours at most to install.

But I think the data plate "upgrade" is what tips it for me.

Thank you all for your input.

One more thing to think about. Resale will be higher or at least easier with the tow package. IMO, anytime a factory tow package is available on anything, get it. :)

Go to Walmart and get a draw bar (the part that goes into the receiver), the draw bar pin/clip, and a ball of the correct size for your trailer.

You will need to figure the correct drop for the draw bar based on the height of your trailer.

Thats it.

That changes things slightly. Technically, you should be able to tow that weight with just a ball on the bumper, but the tongue height probably won't be correct. Much better off with the receiver hitch.

You can get one for that price, but most would argue it's not comparable to the OEM. The full frame one would be closest to the OEM, and it's ugly as hell. Looks like something U-Haul bolted on. Not even close to the factory look.

For comparison, here's the factory one from about the same angle (forgive the dirt, lol)

Though I'm going to go factory, I just wanted to include this for others reference in the future.

This Curt Hitch is $109 (shipped) on e-Trailer and is rated for 5000 lbs. Its a very clean install. Unlike the photo attached. If you remove the bumper, you can install it without cutting the bumper plastic.

Though if you have to remove the bumper, it's almost as much work, and nowhere near as strong as the OEM one. Not even safe up to the safe capacity of the truck.

I get it. Its all about priorities.

IMHO. If I was thinking of just using the bumper mount, for $100, I'd do this instead.

Unless I was a hard core off roader. In which case I'd pass. Looking at all these hitches I'm realizing that if departure angle really matters, you are better off without a hitch.

My JTR did not come with the tow package so I installed the Curt hitch above. You do not have to remove the bumper to install. You only have to remove the bumper if you don't want to drill out the plastic cover over the factory bumper hole. I just went ahead and drilled the hole in the plastic, made for a quick and easy install. If I was ordering, I would have just added the tow package.

Saving $200 on a $50k vehicle makes no sense whatsoever ... Go factory ...

And no one has mentioned the most important thing about towing with a Mojave (which is that your rear end will drop way lower than you will like) ... The sand running soft rear springs are great for ride ... And ... Not great for towing ...

You need air bags more than you need other things for towing with Mojave ...

Mine has the towing package and the large fan which is great to have ... The tow hitch is nice from the factory ...

When the large fan kicks in , it really moves a lot of air and the temps drop rapidly ..... A no brainer in my book ...

Count on buying a $100 minimum air bag kit and spending a Saturday installing it ... Its the only (cost effective) way to keep the truck level when towing a modest (3000 #) load ...

As far as the 6000# "capacity" ??? Yeah ... Sure, they mean that the truck wont explode into a pile of molten metal if you tow 6000 .. But, Id never consider it ... I just towed 3200# over the last weekend and that is about as much as Id like to tow ... Can it do it ? Sure ... Is it fun or even a nice experience ? No Way ...

I'm sure someone will chime in with another opinion but Ill tell you ... say maybe 4000# is about as high as id like to go ... I don't like beating up my investment and the way she acts at #4000 is about as much as Id like to subject her to and I live in the (relatively flat) midwest ...

Yes, people do it ... Im not one of them ...

In any event, ya need airbags ...
