First off, I believe you pay for what you get. Obvious your a fellow Gladiator owner, so I would guess your like me... Spend a few extra bucks for what you want and like. This way you know you will enjoy and use. I’ve been researching for well over a year, being 6’5”, 250 lbs, I needed a boat that would fit me. I also needed two for my 16 and 15 year old kids for some family time. The kids are small framed but tall 6’ and 5’7”. The Wilderness Tarpon 105 is a 10.5 foot boat, tracks excellent, can hold up to 325 lbs and overall extremely reliable and great quality. Also when my buddy wants to go fishing with me, it will hold his big @$$.Looking to get two kayaks this season myself. What made you choose those?
As far as the Hobie. They are hands down the best pedde drive systems on the market. I originally wanted the passport 10’5”, but after sitting in it, I had to go with a 12’ boat. I tried the Passport 12’ but it was not as good as the compass 12’; and The Great Outdoor Provision Company hooked me up with the camo edition 2019. Not saying I like the Camouflage but it’s grown on me, plus it came with the 180 drive for forward and reverse...
So I wanted my kayak to have the peddle drive for just in case situations if We were out in the lake, kid gets tired or whatever, I can tow them in using leg power vs arm power. Not to mention great for fishing. All boats are sit on top because that’s what I prefer, easy to enter/ exit.
I will give a shout out to The Great Outdoor Provision Company in Charlotte and Winston-Salem. With the Covid-19 total shutdown. I reached out to my local shop and asked about the boats. Unfortunately they didn’t have any of them however they had their Winston-Salem store reach out. To make a long story short, they met us at the store and gave the kids and I the store to ourselves. One on one Q&A, discounts for driving to them and an absolute pleasure to buy from.
I highly recommend buying and supporting local shops for all kayaking needs! Good luck on finding your yaks!
