10k should be minimum. Remember, a winch’s rating is based on a single line pull.
Also, a winch has it's max pulling power with the first wrap. Each wrap after that. The pulling power decreases. With 5 wraps. A winch may loose half of it's pulling power.

The hilarious part. OP probably really wants a 12k pound wench. The bigger the better for some.

On serious note. I bet if OP searches "winch" instead then he might then find the real answer he was looking for.
Yep. Misspelled it.

Your winch should be reflective of what you plan to use it for. Are you going to do a lot of wheeling/recovery, or pulling out tree stumps? Remember, the 12K rating is the pulling power of the winch, not the physical size. I added the Badland to my JTR because 1) it was the best deal for the money, 2) it has more than enough pulling power for my use, and 3) it only added a few pounds more weight than winches rated at lesser lbs. Note also, that a synthetic cable will weigh less than a steel cable (which is where most of the weight comes from). Since you have a JTO, you'll have to change bumpers to add a winch, so there are additional weight considerations with that as well. Here's a pic of a Badland 12K on my 2020 JTR so you can get a visual of size. The entire set-up (winch plate etc) added approx 87lbs to the front of the JTR and dropped the front end about 1/2 inch, (I have a teraflex spacer in front which minimized drop). Gas mileage took a hit due to added weight, but who cares at this point, it's a Jeep. Lots of decisions with a winch that only you can make, but why not get the most pulling power for your $$, than to get stuck and wish you had a bigger winch? Good luck.

I appreciate the info.

Take the Gross vehicle weight of your truck and add 30% to it and that's the size winch you should put on it. A stock JT would be ok with a 9000lb or 10000lb winch. I'm on 37's, front and rear steel bumpers and then you got to add in any gear you would be packing when going out on the trail. That's why I opted for a 12,000lb winch. A wise old man who was smarter than me said better to have to much than to little. He could also pull darn near anything out with a 6,000lb winch and snatch blocks.

Dang. Y’all start this thread less than 24 hrs after I drop for a Quadratec stealth 10k. I reckon it will be more than enough for recovery and self recovery with a snatch block but maybe I’m not thinking things through. Appreciate any wisdom out there.

10k is fine. It’s what inrun and works perfect. I do have a snatch block if I need more umph or have an off angle pull/anchor/etc

Correct, I got distracted and didn’t finish my post.
On my Jk, 9,000 worked.

brother-in-law has a 15k for his F250.

Just pulled an Escalade 15 mins ago out who drove too far onto to the shoulder and sunk 2 feet into a snow bank. Easy peasy with my Warn 12s. I love pulling cars out.

I remember doing that when I lived there in CO and had a Cherokee Chief (the original)…..we’d run up to Summit county and pull out all the Texans in rental cars……just for fun, not for money.

I live in summit county, and you’re right. It’s great fun. They all thank you, or apologize. They don’t understand it’s one of my favorite things.

The heavier the vehicle, the more powerful winch you'll need. Your winch should be able to pull at least 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle. You can calculate it by taking the gross vehicle weight and multiply it by 1.5. This is the minimum rating, but certain factors can make your winch capacity be exceeded.

I have a Warn M1500 on my Power Wagon. There have been times where that wasn't enough. Had to double the line. That's 30,000lbs for a 7,800 lb truck. Yeah, I WAS stuck.
Get sucks into the Iowa clay and muck - there's been full-grown men who had trouble getting their feet up out of the mud. Many have left boots in the mud....

And like said - the rating is first wrap only - the ability goes DOWN with each successive wrap of cable or rope. It's pure physics/science.

I agree with JeeperJamie, I have the diesel and steel bumpers , so 12k and a snatch block for me. Gas motor ? Plastic bumpers ? 10k and a snatch block ? 12k would pull you up a cliff .... Lol

Gas with steel bumpers, rock sliders, and belly skid, with 37’s and a trailer, back to 12k. :)
