Hello all. Finally back again. I searched throughout the forums and didn't seem to find any reviews on or comparisons of winches. I know that for the price, the Badlands Apex is the best winch going. I was just wondering if the Gladiator needs a 12000 lb winch? I mean, in sure it would be great, but I have the 6 cylinder in my JTO and the extra weight savings with a smaller, lighter one might be a better idea for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Can't just base vehicle weight as sole qualifier for what weight winch to get.

Where are you going to be wheeling at? What type of conditions? If you're stuck in deep mud, you have the suction of the mud adding a considerable amount of force to the pull.

If you're rock crawling, and high center, you may have to overcome the friction plus whatever might be holding you.

Rule of thumb has always been get the biggest you can afford AND fit.

Personally I've never been a fan of overweight wenches, at 12k she'll probably crush you and your truck
The hilarious part. OP probably really wants a 12k pound wench. The bigger the better for some.

On serious note. I bet if OP searches "winch" instead then he might then find the real answer he was looking for.

My knowledge of winches is limited, I'll let others who are more versed give you advice. I do think if you go lighter you'll probably want a snatch block to double your pulling power.

The heavier the vehicle, the more powerful winch you'll need. Your winch should be able to pull at least 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle. You can calculate it by taking the gross vehicle weight and multiply it by 1.5. This is the minimum rating, but certain factors can make your winch capacity be exceeded.

I have a Warn M1500 on my Power Wagon. There have been times where that wasn't enough. Had to double the line. That's 30,000lbs for a 7,800 lb truck. Yeah, I WAS stuck.

Weight savings between 9k, 10k, and 12k is pretty negligible. I strongly recommend the smittybilt xrc gen 3 series. Consistently out performs warn, moderate water resistance, style points.

Your winch should be reflective of what you plan to use it for. Are you going to do a lot of wheeling/recovery, or pulling out tree stumps? Remember, the 12K rating is the pulling power of the winch, not the physical size. I added the Badland to my JTR because 1) it was the best deal for the money, 2) it has more than enough pulling power for my use, and 3) it only added a few pounds more weight than winches rated at lesser lbs. Note also, that a synthetic cable will weigh less than a steel cable (which is where most of the weight comes from). Since you have a JTO, you'll have to change bumpers to add a winch, so there are additional weight considerations with that as well. Here's a pic of a Badland 12K on my 2020 JTR so you can get a visual of size. The entire set-up (winch plate etc) added approx 87lbs to the front of the JTR and dropped the front end about 1/2 inch, (I have a teraflex spacer in front which minimized drop). Gas mileage took a hit due to added weight, but who cares at this point, it's a Jeep. Lots of decisions with a winch that only you can make, but why not get the most pulling power for your $$, than to get stuck and wish you had a bigger winch? Good luck.

I love my Warn Evo 12S. I’ve used it 1/2 dozen times in less than a year. Only once to recover myself though. I went with the 12 since we often pull a 3000lb off road trailer, and wanted to be able to recover the whole rig if stuck, with the right recovery accessories. For me, the bumper and winch manufacturer being the same made for very nice one stop shop support, with no finger pointing between vendors. Got a great deal on Amazon.

10k should be minimum. Remember, a winch’s rating is based on a single line pull with only one layer on the drum.

Looking forward to using my Warn 12s. I'm looking for ways to have to use it.

At the last loop.

Winch rating are also based on the first wrap of line also. pulling pounds decrease as the hook gets closer to the vehicle.
