Has anyone realized batteries for a solar powered backup system on your home are only good for +\- 5 years? There is no long term value in this technology.

Check the date on your source. Tesla whole house batteries are now warrantied for double that amount, 10 years. Most EV manufacturers are now warrantying their batteries for 8 years. But here’s the kicker. Just as your source of information has been outdated in a a few short years, so too will the current battery technology thats out there today. This technology is advancing so quickly, we should be looking towards the future and not backwards at the days of AA and D cell batteries we grew up with.

I wouldn’t “buy into the hybrid” unless you work from home and/or drive less than 35 miles/day as current technology stands. I have a 4xe Sahara parked next to my gladiator in the garage. It’s great for dropping kids at school and stopping at grocery store. I wouldn’t take it from Stowe Vermont to Moab

Why not? Took ours on a 1600 mile road trip on 37s, no worse fuel econ than my gladiator but a hell of a lot more power, especially in the mountains. Did have to stop for gas 2 more time than when I did the trip in the gladiator though for the smaller tank.

Not to turn this into a general EV discussion but Teslas to me have given EVs a bad rap. They are boring to drive, quality sucks, and the interiors are absolutely horrendous. I wasn’t really sold on EVs from my Tesla Model 3 experience either but that all changed now that we traded my wife’s model 3 in for a Kia EV6 GT. It has 576 hp, 545 torque and 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. It drives amazingly in straight lines and corners great. You can actually even drift it like a normal car. The interior is much more like a normal car and is really nice too.

We are averaging 260 miles of range on a full charge (EPA rates it at about 200 for some dumb reason). It was cheaper than my Mojave at $50K now as prices have dropped.

I love my Mojave and my 21 has only 8K miles still but eventually I think I’ll get that 4XE if the prices can stay like the ICE ones. The 3.6 is what’s holding the JT back from being a near perfect truck to me. I’m not sure yet if I’d go full EV on my truck given that we have 1 EV already and I’ve always viewed the truck as our road-trip vehicle. I don’t really like depending on charging stations but maybe that’ll change at some point. We have yet to need a charging station (outside of our home one) for the Kia as 260 is way beyond the range we normally need. Also my commute each day round trip is less than 20 miles so the hybrid should be fine.

Hey, I just bought an EV6 last month myself. still have my Manual JT, which is like the exact opposite of this car. The EV6 is just amazing. But the JT is still the best vehicle to have for the apocalypse.

Yep, you can include me in that.. I figured 24 might be it for the JT. Surprised, nah, I ain't no insider. Pleased, sure, even with refresh, we will still have many spare parts on the shelves long in the future. Can't wait to see the refresh. Wrench safe, have fun!!

8-10 years is good for a cellphone. Not so much for a vehicle that many will have a 7-8 year loan on.

Its a warranty, not a use by date. What do our jeeps come with? 5 year powertrain? I’ve got friends who drive +10 year old teslas. Granted, they might only get 80% of the original battery capacity. But the battery doesnt just die at year 8.

No one talks about it because it's a strawman argument that is not based on facts, just more fearmongering. The grid can not handle the entire fleet switching to EVs at once right now, that's true. But even if there actually was a mandate that happened tomorrow saying all new cars have to be EV, it would be decades to transition the US fleet of cars to ev. In the mean time the grid would adapt, expand, and modernize just as it's done to continue to provide power to a burgeoning population.

My current commute is 10 miles round trip to work. If we move next year it will be closer to 20 miles round trip. A 4xe Gladiator would be awesome for that.

I'd still take it to Moab once a year too

I doubt I could afford a new half electric Gladiator anyway - so guess I'm driving the one I have for awhile, lol.

Having remembered the gas shortages from the 1970's and rationing based on the odd/even number day of the week and fill up was only allowed based on the same odd/even ending number on the license plate, I can see them doing the same with EV's based on VIN's and it would just be as easy as a telematics update sent to the vehicle locking people out from charging only certain days.

I have no problem doing all those things at the same time in my house. Are you thinking this will be an issue in the future? Maybe the grid couldn't handle an overnight transition to EV but it's not going to happen overnight so the grid will grow as the transition occurs to accommodate. I'm sure there were similar fears when gas vehicles replaced horses. But gas stations grew as more people bought cars.
