I am seriously considering shipping my Gladiator to Iceland next year spending a month or so driving some of the more epic F roads. In reading about it it’s obvious that there will be many, many river crossings and some of them could be deep (and potentially not crossable depending on the weather etc.).
So I want to build up the JT to handle these crossings as best as possible.

What snorkel would provide the best air box protection and what if any modifications would I need to do to the box to accomplish my task.

Im already planning on extending my dif breather tubes.

Thanks!

Transfer case vent is low, might want to modify the air box to block the "ram air" inlet in grill on passenger side. Not sure when wiring like at Battery becomes an issue, perhaps just drive fast...Fast Eddie!
I don't run a snorkle but always liked the design of the River Raider version which went out of business.....Jack

Yep! I should have mentioned the transfer case breather as well.

Check your inbox.
I think you're better off fabricating a diving bell for the truck.

But that sounds like a fantastic trip!

River Raider just seems like a nice design , can put lower pipes on it when not really needing the water crossing height. Shame no one picked up the design….Jack

I had a River Raider on my LJ. They accidentally sent me 2 of them. 1 hard pipe and 1 flex pipe. Put the hard on my Jeep and the flex on my buddy’s manual TJ. Great design. Cant really see a good way to do it on the JT but the AmFib thing is close. I plan on running that one at some point. It sure if I’d trust it for full on deep water crossing though. Too many points that it “could” leak. Mine is going to be for desert use.

Hi Eddie,

I was on Iceland once and this is also my goal to go back there with my JT... can you please advise what logistic you are using for moving your JT there?

Little more details, please.

Correct me if I’m wrong. But what good is a snorkel going to do for you fuse box and lower battery and connectors?

Typically you don't get much water that high in the bay if you keep moving at a steady pace as the vehicle is pushing the water away, and all those componenets are protected enough that unless you stop mid crossing, they should remain fairly dry. They are also mostly sealed connections, at lest where it matters (also why its important to dielectric grease everything periodically). Even the fuse box lid should seal well enough unless you've cut a bunch of holes for running wires through it.

Air boxes are different though, and the water that pushes up agaisnt the grill and spill over hoods and fenders can get drawn into them much easier.

Hi Mirek! I’m glad to share what little I know but in fact I’ve learned learned a lot from a fellow Jeeper, Dan Grec, who posts on here and has his own Youtube channel called, The Road Chose Me. He has traveled extensively and shipped his various jeeps many times.

Here is his video explaining how he shipped his vehicle from Halifax, NS to Iceland. This is the route I’m planning on taking as well.

Something... something... software.
I have the AmFib style snorkel. I didn't get the brand name version and it did not come with a drain tube and valve for the air box. So what I did, based on my boating knowledge from living in FL for 26, was to seal up the holes with RTV and XMas tree plugs. Then, instead of doing a drain plug with tube and valve to open and close, I used a floating ball scupper drain on the lowest point. So, haven't done any deep water crossing yet, but if the water level were to rise to the bottom of the air box, the ball will float up and seal the box. I figured this was the best solution, as most of the time it will allow water to drain out (if any ingested from rain or say a careless car wash session).
