I just don't get the allure of a hybrid pickup truck. No interest here at all. Same answer in 2022 when Jeep releases a hybrid Gladiator.
Hybrids for the make ME feel good about MYSELF crowd which will not be a hill of beans when the Sun obliterates every thing this side of the asteroid belt.

Two different market segments.

Kevin
You may be right but I'm not so sure. What market segment are they targeting, compact truck? There's no such thing anymore. The days of the S10, (old) Ranger, T1000, Faster, etc. are over. (As an aside I loved my old '88 S10.) Jeep had a concept pickup based on the recent Renegade platform that looked pretty cool but to the best of my knowledge they scrapped due to there not being a market for it. The Maverick IMO looks like a midsize.

Not a bad small vehicle. The electric stuff is no longer a fad. I know that is crazy to say. Trust me I have plenty of fuel burning friends with tats of them on my arms. Electric is no longer about emissions or saving money, it is a new performance equalizer. The electric drivetrain components hitting the market offer surprizing numbers with a simplified design. When you wake up in the morning it is fueled. The new 4xe has 370 hp and 480 ftlbs of torque! What jeep ever had those numbers and can leave the drive in silence? I have three supercharged vehicles two turbos and a big block, but as an engineer I can see the writing on the wall, and it aint all bad. Less transmission, more go, lots of torque and power. Just gonna have to figure out a good way to make and store electrons. Its getting better.

This is their response to the critics that wanted a compact truck as the original ranger was. I agree with the awful original Maverick.
My wife saw a Ranger the other day when we were driving and she said man that thing doesn't look anything like the ranger you used to have. I said no its not.

If they can sell a front wheel drive one of these that sits right for 22k with mpg similar to a Camry or Accord but can haul some and tow some why not? It’s going to compete with SUVS AND SEDANS not real trucks. I say there is a market if the price is right
The bummer is no available AWD/4x4 system.

I would hope the Ford marketing team told the media who will be reviewing this "do not compare this *at all* to the Ranchero of the 60s and 70s."

Looks very similar to the Rivian.

Isn't AWD available on the 2.0T model?

I towed 2000# with my eco-boom that was rated to tow up to 3650#. When the turbo created too much heat, the computer would disengage the turbo, and you we're stuck with a 2.0 liter engine towing. It got ugly early. I wonder if they fixed the power brake booster issues with that series of engine. It's said, when you lose the power brakes, shut the engine down immediately, as the failure of the brake assist system would wipe the engine. Got rid of it before that could happen. A dyed in wool Ford guy, and I bought a Gladiator. I imagine towing with a FWD must be interesting as well.

I got to ride in a Tesla short time back and I thought it was fantastic. If I could afford to have a 3rd car and had place to charge it I would consider an electric for a work car since I am assuming at some point will have to start going back to the office which is 50 miles each way and since they have jacked up fuel cost for at least the next 4 years

If I didn't live in a place where 4wd and lockers were occasionally mandatory for daily things, this would be pretty attractive. Also, if it wasn't a Ford. Not a Ford fan. I do, so it's not.

Meanwhile, my brother is a teacher in Dallas. He is getting to the point where he has been thinking about buying a house, and about a year ago decided he wanted to trade his Kia Soul in for a truck. He didn't need a big truck, and couldn't afford much. I steered him toward the Ranger, because all he could afford was the basest of base models, and the Ranger at least didn't screw him on the drivetrain (the most important part of any vehicle, especially a truck). He's been pretty pleased with it from what I gather. Had this been available though, he could have saved a few $K, and would probably be much happier with the fuel economy and size. There's no way for him to store a trailer, so that 1500# payload is pretty seriously good.

I think it'll be a big win for Ford (Kia is hardly a truck brand, and I don't know that their trucklet will really be taken seriously until the segment gets some legs), and I imagine the others will follow suit. 2023 will probably see a Rav4 (or whatever) based trucklet, and it'll dominate hard.

Regardless of what a tesla runs on. Once you drive one, it is hard to deny it is a well designed and constructed car. I put a charger in for our 4xe. It was a pain, and there is not alot of concrete information for codes and what not. Also there is limited info on trusted vendors and what not. I just used my best judgement. Probably be a Mike Holmes special in the distant future lol.

More palpable than the Hyundai Santa Cruz. I would not replace my Gladiator with it, but if I was in the market for a daily commuter ride, would consider getting one.

For all the internet hand wringers cry for the old days of a cheap economical truck, this maybe the closest it is going to get. I suspect like someone else mentioned, the base XL stripped versions are going to be hard to find unless ordered. Would not surprise me to see them start showing up in fleet sales as auto parts store runner trucks.

My take on it is they wanted to make something similar an El Camino but couldn't quite rip that off. It's a small truck that's efficient that you can occasionally put something in the back of.

The people complaining about the hybrid version of this: Is it really that terrible to have a little less power in a non-serious offroader/hauler/pickup for +50% fuel savings? If I could pay about half my fuel bill for a few small concessions I would. I would treat this exactly as I stated above, possibly a slightly more capable car with a bed and great mileage.

I think the real big drawback will be when people get into it and it's nothing but cheap hard plastic all around. That's not even to talk about the rattling that will start probably after a few hundred miles. It's a super cheap truck and I bet you feel it hard core when you get inside.

A custom shop actually did it and since I had a 2017 Renegade DesertHawk before my Gladiator (Actually traded it for $17500 towards it) I am rather fond of a little tiny Comanche Renegade.
