I ended up in a similar situation where I realized I needed more space for kids and having a bigger truck bed for a change in my work would be really helpful. I was lucky that no accident was involved(hope all is well) and got offered a crazy trade in with 22,000 miles on my rubicon. I picked up a power wagon and love it. I also really miss my gladiator and will be on the look out for some sort of wrangler/gladiator if used car prices ever drop back down to earth.

Ok guys I bought a gladiator a few months ago lifted it added 37’s and 2 day after getting it I was broadsided and jeep was totaled. While I loved it for those 2 days I did not get to get out of the honeymoon phase. I’m looking for a new vehicle I was going for the rubicon gladiator again, but started considering the tundra. Now I know this is a biased place to ask but I know members have considered the same. My off-roading consists of logging roads around my camp and the yearly trip to Arkansas. Another factor is I have 3 children and I am 6,4ā€. Thanks for any helpful info you can give to lean me either way.

Not to be a Dick but I don’t know why people ask stuff like this. Everybody has their own opinions based on individual need and likes. I traded in a Tundra for the Taco I then traded in for the JT. Not once did it occur to me to ask anyone else what I should do. YMMV…

Edited to add that I can see asking about performance or reliability as that is a different issue altogether.

Prices are comparable, it's not that silly a question.

Really comes down to you though. Do you have need of a full size truck? Does that need surpass your interest in the gladiators unique features (roof off, doors off, road-off)?

I considered the tundra and the Tacoma. But my love for all things convertible was too strong.

Buying a tundra over a gladiator would be like choosing to date the fat girl over a model.

But if you’re already on the fence about the fat girl then go ahead and admit you like fat girls. Because that’s where it’ll end up anyway.

Very different vehicles. But if you need full size, get the tundra. It's gonna ride and drive better. Too big for me, so that's why I ended up in the gladiator. It was gladiator vs bronco vs Tacoma vs JLU for me. Gladiator was a more comfortable than the Tacoma, plus the roof comes off, so I got it. Tundra was too big for my needs. If you have the need/use for a full size, go for it.

Here's my take having owned 3 Tundras and now the Gladiator. The Tundra is better if you travel, have kids, and are bigger. The space and power is great. The Gladiator is better if most of your driving is around towns and cities. I live in a suburb outside of Nashville and it is great on county roads and around town. However, it suffers on the interstate and on trips longer than 45 minutes for me. Not saying you can't travel comfortably but the fullsize trucks feel better to me.
I chose the Gladiator because it is the bigger of the mid-size trucks but doesn't drive like a boat in parking lots. I only take about 2 trips a year. The Tundras were not fun to park or drive in city streets. Also if you want to do trails obviously the Gladiator is superior. Pick the one that fits your needs the most.

Agreed. But don't forget the ace-in-the-hole. The doors come off on the gladiator.

Isn't a better comparison the Tacoma? If you're leaning toward a full size truck you might already know what you want...
For a tall guy? My two cents…no. I’m in the 6’3ā€-6’4ā€ range. Every time I sit in a Tacoma, I come away wondering how anyone that’s tall can comfortably operate one.

The headroom in Tacoma’s is absolutely abysmal. The legroom isn’t great. The seating position is weird. Google ā€œToyota Tacoma headroom.ā€ As I mentioned In another thread, you’ll find clowns talking about how you need to learn to sit in it. No shit. Drop $40k+ on a vehicle and then need to learn to sit in it so that your head (if you’re tall and not all legs) isn’t on the headliner. On the flip side, I have literally inches of headroom in my Gladiator.

Back to the OP’s question…If I had three kids and this was a daily driver, I’d want something roomier than a Gladiator.

I was a pretty big fan of the FJ cruiser. I’ve had two and still have one of them. GREAT little trucks, reliable and fun. I will say my 21 Mojave drives, rides, and handles better than the FJ, and thus far has been every bit as reliable. The kicker about this Mojave though, is that the doors and top come off. Off. You have kids, and there’s just great potential imo for having a blast in various ways with a Jeep, that just can’t be duplicated by anything in the Toyota lineup. If you fit fine in the Gladiator, then to me, it’s almost a no-brainer. Most Toyotas are fantastic appliances. Reliable and true, but appliances nonetheless. The FJ, to me, was one of the few things theyā€˜ve produced in the last two decades that actually had some personality. Still, the doors and top didn’t come off. I can’t emphasize enough the fun potential that this provides for kids. Great memories to be made. When grown, I doubt they’ll remember much about riding with dad in a Tundra. A Jeep though, that I bet they’ll remember, and think it was pretty darn cool. Just my 2 cents.

As a big supporter of more than a little junk in the trunk on the ladies, I take this analogy personally! But I get where OP is coming from and having driven pickups my whole life, the one I wish I'd never gotten rid of was a Tacoma. Toyota makes a damn good engine and decent pickups built around it, especially as longevity goes. It isn't a convertible with removable doors that will go anyfuckingwhere you point it like Jeep, and it isn't but about 1/2 as capable off-road stock, 1/5 as customizable, and 10% as cool, but those things may not be what you're looking for. I'm 6'1 and my head rubs the freedom panel if I'm upright with good posture. It doesn't have half the road manners as my old Ram or Chevy. But it's more fun to take camping, hunting, or just on a ride on the parkway than anything I've ever owned and by quite a margin. I test-drove and pondered everything on the market a (year ago tomorrow, actually) but this was just the truck for me and I knew it early on. If you don't feel the same, something else my make you happier, and I'm not going to be a jerk about it that you're leaving our club! Best wishes for whatever you decide.
