Looking for some real world input on 4.56 gears. I’m fortunate enough to have a relative who does performance 4wd work and he had a customer back out of a job after he purchased the parts and he’s giving me a sweet deal if I decide to pull the trigger. I honestly don’t need to do it but I’m on BFG 37s with 4.10 ratio and I’m really happy with the 16mpg I’m averaging. I want to know if anyone wishes they had done 4.88 for whatever reasons and how the 4.56 for whoever has them affected their mpg around town and on long trips. I’ll probably end up having him install a front locker as well and I’m gana go with his preference because he’s installed quite a few on JLs and JTs in the past couple years. I’ve asked him the same questions and he doesn’t think much will change because it’s not that big of a jump from the 4.10s to 4.56. I don’t see myself going up to a bigger tire anytime soon mabey a true 37mud in a year two but don’t want to drive around on anything bigger.

I am going 4.56s on my diesel JT next week. However, if I had a gasser on 37s I’d very likely be going 5.13s.

4.56s were the best combo for 37s for our use. We do a lot of freeway miles with the cruise at at 85mph.

We have 4.56 on our wrangler, with 37's. I think they are perfect. 17 mpg and its in 8th on an incline. Unless you are doing alot of heavy towing or climbing the face of a boulder its fine. 4 to 1 low on a Rubicon works real well with 4.56. Hell the difference between 4.10 and 33's and 37's 4.56 is like 30 rpms or something. If you can get a great deal go for it.

I have a manual trans and 35's. I went to 4.63. Even then I never see 6th gear on the interstate unless it's flat. With my steel bumpers, underarmor, etc, I'm pretty heavy.

It's fine, but had I to do it over again, I'd have gone 5.13 and then skip 1st gear on take-off as it's too low for road use, great for trails.

You can opt for 4.88 too with some of the JL models.

We have a JLU with the 4.88 gear option. Had to custom order it. The 4.88s are perfect with the stock 33s and manual transmission.
Personally, I wouldn’t consider 4.56 gears. If regearing - I would go 4.88s for 35s, 5.13s for 37s.

2020 JT owner here, just reaching 100k on her. I've recently had a rear wheel/axel bearing go out, I took the opportunity to replace the rear axels, re-gear to 4.88's and replace the Trac-Loc with an eaton truetrac diff. I'm one year into a set of Goodyear Duratrac RT LT 33's. I live on an active volcano where my top speed is 65 and my average is 45. I cruise at 45 in 8th gear.. I'm averaging 23mpg.

Oh, and I go down into waipio monthly, hands down the steepest road on American territory, 45% at times. My 3.73s never had an issue, but the 4.88's make it fun.

Not that it matters…. We had a YJ (manual tranny) with 35’s and 4.56’s (4.0L V6).
That was a great combination to get it back to ‘stock’ performance.

Unless you are constantly cruising highway at high speeds, you won't really notice an mpg hit unless you start hitting the boot harder cause it's more fun off the line. That said, unless you need new gears I wouldn't bother going 1 step up from 4.10 to 4.56, will barely be noticeable at a fairly large investment.

I have 4.88's with my stock 32's and it's barely enough lol.

You probably won't notice a different between 4.10's and 4.56's. I normally say you need to jump at least 2 ratios to make a difference.

Depends on how good a deal you are getting on the parts, and if you are wanting to install lockers at the same time or not. If you are just getting gears and it's only 5-10% off the price of the gears themselves, I'd probably pass.

If you can get them installed out the door for $1000-$1500, I might consider it, but unless you spend most of your tim e80MPH+ on the interstate you'd probably be a lot happier with 4.88's or 5.13's.

I'm on 37" BFG ATs and can get 20 on the interstate if I drive the speed limit, I normally average around 17 when combining my Atlanta sitting in traffic and highways to/from work.
