while there are the occasional exceptions :
truck- body on frame
car- unibody
So what you're telling me is that there are cars that tow more and can carry more than the Gladiator? Pretty embarrassing for a truck.

Easier to just set a universal standard: open cargo area and can carry a full sheet without a flag? It's a truck. Closed cargo area or cannot carry a full sheet without a flag? It might as well be a car.

I can fit more stuff and more weight in my 4Runner than I could my max tow.

Does it really matter? Does it make you enjoy the vehicle more or less? Would it being a ”truck” make you enjoy it more? It is a vehicle, like any other. Call it what you want.

And for the Ridgeline haters, South Carolina considers them a truck and it is taxed based on towing capacity. I did not care, I just drove it.

Exactly….. Here in PA, because it has a tow rating of above 5,000lbs, it’s considered a CLASS II truck registration. The cost is $30 more per year than the Class I.

I only ever tow 3-4,000lbs. On my previously owned 2007 Tacoma (Class II), I looked into the option of downgrading to a Class I. It would‘ve been the biggest paperwork nightmare to do it…. So, I just left it a Class II.
Pa. doesn't go by tow rating. It goes by registered gross weight in lbs.
Also, your bumper height allowed is based off of your registered weight.

Class 1, 5,000 lbs or less. Front 24", Rear 26"
Class 2, 5,001 to 7,000 lbs. Front 27", Rear 29"
Class 3, 7,001 to 9,000 lbs. Front 28", Rear 30"

GM made a lot of cars with body on frame over the years. So did Ford.

In Louisiana all Jeeps were able to be registered as cars—this the license plate was cheaper. We even had a 1 ton Ford Econoline with a car tag because at the time it was classed as a station wagon.
