and this is my lemon gladiator...I bought it three years ago, I WOULD NOT BUY IT AGAIN TODAY, two years walking from dealer to dealer and spending money and they never solved anything for me. This is my latest diagnosis...has anyone had something similar happen to them? totally lost

It is likely the cams took a dump, cams in the 3.6 are a known issue. Chrysler uses a soft french cheese for cam material. For a hour of time it might be worth having the shop pop the valve cover to #5 valve side. But worn cam lobes shouldn't cause low compression... unless the intake valves are barely opening.

Any sort of oil consumption or blue smoke when running?

it's hard to call a car with 90K of miles a lemon, thats a good chunk of miles in just 3 years, I have a 2001 honda civic from new used everyday for work and that has 150K to put into perspective your 90K in 3 years.

Where is the noise coming from? If top end, it may just need cams and head work.

A lot of shops shotgun straight to engine replacement because that is the big ticket item.

Stuff like this is why I am glad I do frequent oil analysis testing so I can see things happening before they are catastrophic and hopefully get ahead of a problem.

Yup, very rare, but it does happen. Should be under your 5 year 60k power train and you'll have a brand new engine.

By the looks of that invoice it doesn't look like they're considering this to be warranty work.

First, figures out low compression issue. Check valve lash for bent valve. Add some oil into the cylinder, do a compression test for rings or cylinder wall issue. If valve, replace the head than sell the truck.

I mean if you're replacing the engine it sounds like a hemi swap wouldn't be that much more expensive.
Well that would be awesome but I think that is a bit more than 12k, think they are in the 40-60k or so.

AMW wants 35 for a 392...they don't list a 5.7 but might be worth calling for a quote on that. I'd think it would be a bit less then a 392. Still a little more then 12k I'm wagering, but I would not pay 12k to install another 3.6.

Wow. Horrible. Not an expert but as others have said I would check for cam wear before dropping 12k
