12 labor hours seems really high. I just had this done 6 weeks ago. Should be about 3 to 4 hours per axle. 8 hours on high end for the job.

I’m driving 3 hours towards charlotte even though ECGS is like 10 minutes away. 1000+ less and getting warranty. ECGS told me they wouldn’t install customer supplied parts and were charging something like double what Id pay for the same parts. Then another local truck shop said they would do it— guess what- they contract it out to ECGS and they were going to use my parts….. super annoying. Shop in Greensboro was similar quote around 37-3800. Crazy difference in prices.
Not sure how it is in your state, but in CA the shop that sublets the work assumes all warranty responsibility......It wouldn't be good business practice to screw a partner shop, but the law is the law never the less?

I still wouldn't install the parts I don't supply anyway just to eliminate all the possible problems!

Fine someone in your local jeep club that has done it a few times and pay them well. Heck, 2 guys in the shop getting it done in a day.

Alternative idea:
Pull the axles, strip them down so all they need to do is is the install.

The prices suck.... I won't put Yukon anything near my Jeep after yesterday.....and I'm going to share on every post. forum, etc. so hopefully no one has to deal with this crap.

That's a Yukon bearing and pinion that disintegrated with no warning under the rigorous abuse of driving to work on the interstate ....so I got to ride home in a wrecker.

I took one of those rides to dealership not same reason.
Unfortunately the Yukon thing is still happening. It was a known to be happening when the XJ's and the TJ's were the new kids on the block.
There's a thread here about the pinion bearing/ crush sleeve problem too. The new axles using the double ball bearing and race with plastic cage vs past roller bearing with metal cage. In the thread he mentioned that the shop fixing his used a spacer and shims with better bearing sets. (If I remember correctly)

Back on this thread; Yeah, that's not cheap but it's their name on the work. Twenty years or so back you could get a gears installed for $500-1000.°° if you supply the parts. That was around Savannah GA. but many of the shops then refused to use Yukon parts only Spicer, Dana, ect. I did the D-44 and D-30 in my XJ then had a friend check the patterns. (Thanks Sidney) RIP.

Call Premier West Gears here in Riverside Ca. Got my Dana Spicer coated 4.88s installed for just under 2K about a year ago. Perfect job, no break in oil change needed. They do have a waiting list for the work. Make the call and plan a trip to our So Cal deserts.

Just got a quote from eastcoast gear supply to put 4.88s in my Mojave. This seems more inline if i wanted a locker added not just a straight regear.

If they are charging you 12 hours of labor- RUN…. A ligit gear shop should have you in and out in a couple hours. Wrong side of the country but- Premier West Gears in Riverside Re-regeared my JKU in an hour and a half…. And I slowed them down BSing and asking questions. With Motive gears and tax It was ~$1500

Got 3 quotes from local shops last summer for 5.13's. $3,500, $3,600, and $2,400.

Had to drive an extra 15 minutes into Idaho for the lower quote.

Told them I wanted Revolution gears, they told me "That's all we install."

Double bonus.
EDS Differential Solutions in Abbotsford BC- look them up, might be worth the run across the boarder…. $2k Canadian bank on that exchange rate discount!

I’d pay whatever. I live in Northern NY and NOBODY does re-gearing up here. Nobody! If anyone knows of a shop in my area that can do it please let me know.

Might be a slow or inexperienced mechanic with 12 hours labor shown but otherwise not out of line. My mechanic who is going to install my 5.12's told me to expect it to take one full workday or slightly more though. The last two setups he did for me took a full day each on my old JK.

Oh I know, honestly I feel for those guys. Their jobs are more physical and significantly more dirty. Tech field is paid a lot more but much more of an engineering job.

I fully agree on trying to keep the skilled hands though, our newer guys are, well, different. I'm only 39 too, so pretty big change in the pipeline. The future looks...

Anyway, just venting with an open mind.
Completely understand about the "youngin's " I was an apprentice instructor for carpenters for my last 7 years working. My best student wouldn't have made it through my apprenticeship in the 1980's

Here’s another for your comparison. I went with Dana Spicer. It’s Dana’s housing and I wanted their OEM quality gear sets going in. This includes installation of lift I supplied, but I think the labor for the gears was 8, 10 hours max. Go somewhere reputable that stands behind their work. Do not pay a buddy on this one.

I recently had a re-gear completed in OCT 2024 at approximately 45K on the odometer; out the door excluding tax was $2668, using factory Dana-Spicer gears, replaced axle bearings and new axle seals. I can't speak highly enough of Dan Taylor at Taylor Axle Works in Placerville CA. A small one man shop , who stands behind his workmanship. He worked with me to ensure we went with the right gear ratio for my anticipated use, etc. working out all the RPM's etc. with differing gear ratios, speeds, etc. Was well worth the drive, he did a great job, and I cannot recommend him highly enough for any axle / gear work. A true gentleman, who delivered what he promised and more.

Damn... I didn't realize they've gotten that high. I moved from NC to CO this past year. I've used them for parts for many years.

I charge $1k+ parts/fluids for re-gears. Simple enough pricing. Anything above $2600 OTD should be considered high.
