The best camping in impromptu. A cooler with drinks and meat to roast over a campfire. Maybe a can of beans to go with it. A bottle of good whiskey and cigars to share with like minded friends. A sleeping bag and a thick foam mattress or even better my cowboy canvas bedroll. And the bed of my truck to lay it down on. If I think there is any chance of rain I either throw my bed tent or my small 3 person Marmot tent in the back seat but I don’t set them up unless I have to.

Currently a ground tent, but I also have an air mattress for the bed.

the long term dream is to get a lightweight slide-in with a pop top, but I’ve only found one that checks the boxes for weight. I know toppers are lighter, but I need something that can be jacked off the bed and sit outdoors when not in use.

Currently a ground tent with inflatable mattress and other creature comforts. But eyeing up a RTT just for the ease of carry it around and popping it open whenever and wherever. Also not having a big tent taking up space in the bed.

My profile pic kind of says it all for me. Lightweight pop-top camper. Did backpacking tents, a gazelle tent, etc. I like being off the ground, and somewhat protected from critters I don't know wanting to snuggle up. Plus, if it's raining or snowing, I'm still good.

I'm not sure if my Alu-Cab Canopy Camper is a truck camper or RTT for the poll as it's somewhere in between. But that's my preferred way of camping. I've gone from sleeping on the ground to a ground tent, to truck bed, to RTTs, to a big truck camper, and now to my canopy camper.

Approaching 60, it gives me enough comfort to be able to stay out camping for as long as I want but isn't as enclosed as a truck camper. Like a tent, I continue to live outside around it rather than inside like when we had the big truck camper. But I can set up in about a minute when needed and just climb inside and up onto the bunk when it's bedtime, no ladder.

Towing a tear-drop queen size trailer is by far the easiest lightest thing you can get.

The only setup is dropping it off the hitch and tossing chocks on the wheels - and a Harbor Freight electric trailer jack makes even that stupid easy.

Ground tent > rtt > overland trailer w/rtt

Got tired or the ground although it was by far the lightest. Moved to rtt but got annoying packing tent up to explore. Custom m1101 trailer w/rtt is Bout 3k lbs loaded but I have hot water, plenty of storage, and leave trailer when exploring.

If I camped a lot more I would love a truck camper, but a trailer works better for me. If I don’t camp for 6 months, it sits in the garage and doesn’t cost me a dime. It also doesn’t affect my daily drive or weekly trail excursions. When I do take the trailer on a trip, it carries a lot of gear and disperses the weight and doesn’t make my vehicle top heavy. An obvious drawback is maneuverability, but I like the challenge and make it work.

We enjoy our rooftop tent, as it has a mattress inside, super easy set up, and keeps our sleeping bags/pillows inside without taking up space in the bed. It keeps us off the ground and away from the critters. We would love a tear drop trailer, due to the kids being larger, costs are much steeper though. One positive with the trailer is you can take it and drop it off at your campsite, while us with the RTT have to completely pack up prior to moving anywhere. One positive is with my set up it all fits in the garage still.

Ground tent right now. SWAG on a cot here in a bit. Either way I’m a ground dweller. For me it’s the process of setting up the tent and camp and the fact that I really don’t want the extra drag up top of an RTT. My up top weight may be water and a solar panel at most. A trailer limits me on where I can go to camp so that’s out. Swag might take 6-7 minutes to set up. Tent is about 10-15 just due to size. Plus when the 2am bladder monster decides to strike I don’t have to face a friggin ladder half awake.

If its the Mrs and I we take the trailer. If it's just me I use the RTT. She likes the hard walls and lockable doors of the trailer, I like the simplicity and quick setup of the RTT.

Curious, what does SWAG stand for, or is this like MOAB?

5 x 10 Offroad trailer. We can also haul our 2 wooden kayaks with the use of an additional bracket not shown in the picture OR the ATV depending on the adventure. Set up for portable solar and has on board water.
