Payload Capacities

Hello all looking into buying the Gladiator and complete newb

the plan was originally to beable to haul a trailer weighing about 5k gross and a family of four but after finding out payload on an Overland today was disappointed that payload was 1061lbs…

a family of 4 this seems like it won’t work…

so now lookin at max tow since payload is almost 1600 I know that the Mojave and Rubi can tow 7k and have 1200 payload but not looking at the price upgrades on those as don’t need the rock crawling extras etc I know there are better tow vehicles etc out there but none where the top comes off.

so curious what a StockSport S payload is? Any helpful existing charts on payload and towing as I’ve found ones with towing capacity no issue.

To have decent towing capability, you need one with the factory installed Tow package. The capacity is similar across all the models, around 6000 towing and 1100 payload, with the automatic transmission. Some are more, and some are less, depending on how they are equipped. The Sport models equipped with the MaxTow package provide the greatest capacity for payload and towing.

As a reference, I've pulled a 5800lb boat with 4 adults in an Overland with no issues. Your hitch setup and payload balance are the key.

Thanks sharpcicle for real world info! This puts it into perspective is your terrain pretty flat? I’m in NV and some of the better camping is heading upto Utah and there are some pretty good grades.

my fam of for consists of one largeadult*cough* myself and the rest of my fam prob close to 700 lbs a tongue weight of 425 on trailer we are looking at

I was definitely not doing any mountain grades. It was a trip from FL up to NC.

Overland auto gas v6 is 1,150lbs; Overland diesel is 1,275lbs; gas Sport/Sport S is 1,200; and gas Sport/Sport S Max Tow is 1,600. Obvious the Max Tow gives you the big upgrade (and some desirable mechanicals IMHO). If I was in your situation and wanted an auto I'd go Max Tow. That said if you're confident on the 425lbs tongue weight and you keep extra weight down in the truck you could probably just squeak by under or at the limit with a Sport/Sport S or maybe an Overland.

Many on here are very cautious about towing and like big 'safety' margins. My perspective is if you're driving carefully it's not unreasonable to be up near the limits a few times per year to have the vehicle you want the other 300+ days each year. And, it's potentially worth noting at even 20 years ago the Gladiator's ratings would put it in the company of what were then seen as heavier duty trucks people wouldn't think twice using to tow a small camper. That said, since you're going to be towing at grade a Max Tow with its 4.10 axle ratio could be a good option anyways.

Max tow, family in the JT, gear in the trailer. I think you said your trailer is around 5k. Max tow has a towing capacity of 7.6k. You should be good. Payload on max tow will even leave you room for some gear in the truck if needed.

However, there are many great threads (with varying opinions) on here with excellent information about towing, different trailer types, aerodynamics, hitch setups, tongue weights, brake controllers, towing in different terrains, etc.

Rough math:

Truck loaded:
Trailer 5k tonged weight @12%= -600
4 people; 125 per kid, wife 150 you 240= -640
Weight distribution hitch Anderson (one of the lightest) -65
Misc: tools? Wife purse? bag of clothes? extra water? Beer? propane bottle for rv? Bikes? -200
Lets not talk abought the bumpers, winches, Wheels and tires, cool doodads and farkles we alllll add to the jeeps.

Truck loaded -1505 pounds.


So options, Overland over loaded before you even start. Or a Max tow at it's limits and now you have to load smart.

To add, my Freedom w Max tow has a payload of 1425. I have steel bumpers, rock guards, and a ton of options from the factory all eating up some payload.
