No worries on filling up with the wrong fuel... the diesel fuel nozzle diameter is larger than a gas one and the diesel has a flap that locks into place and unless the right nozzle is placed correctly then the flap will not move..

stopped at a station by my house and it was my first fill up after I brought it home... nozzle was the wrong size and the flap in the filler would not unlock.. called my salesman and asked him.. he said try a different pump.. drove to the 7-11 across the street and it worked. The first stationer had gas handles on the diesel so they would not unlock the flap..

In hospitals,we usually take a time out and make sure we have the right patient/right procedure etc.. Take a time out before you grab the nozzle.
fitting sinse UCH cut a guys wrong leg off like 10 yrs ago.. now seems they draw all over the patience and take a time out before operating!

This is basic workplace safety 101. Focus on the task at hand. Think about the task and make a plan.
I have driven all manner of vehicles for 50 years and never fuelled incorrectly. It takes 5 seconds to focus before getting to the pump: Oh, what vehicle am I driving today? Ah, yes, it is a diesel. Fill with diesel only. No cellphone outside the vehicle.
My DD work MB van, came back from vacation and on 1st fill up, I grabbed the normal handle and started to fill.. 5-10 seconds I realized "wrong pump" OMG( i have had several MB vans, 1st time doing this)... only put 1/2 gallon of petro and realize what is was doing.. when straight across the street and filled up 20 gal... enough to delute to 1/2 gallon

Sniper, there are usually different size nozzles for diesel and gas. Unfortunately the diesel is the larger so it doesn't fit in a 'gas' tank but the gas nozzle will fit into a diesel filler neck. Sometimes there are cetane ratings on diesel pumps, the numbers will be low like 48-50 but still there.
Your blue DEF filler neck should have a restrictor so that only a small fill hose on those jugs will fit so you should be clear there. (But.... I run a fleet of 50 buses and had several veteran drivers put diesel in the DEF tank despite the 2 inch letters that said DEF ONLY and a lock on the DEF filler door.)
I am thinking that with you being this worried and aware of the possibility, that you should be fine. The biggest problem like you said is being distracted, having something important on your mind as you pull up to the pumps.

I like the idea of a set of gloves for fill up. Not only will it keep your hands and steering wheel clean, it will add to the routine as a reminder. Think rubber coated cloth gloves, leather will just absorb the fuel.

Thank you for you service! An old friend of mine was a 23 year Special Forces Veteran. 985 yards in .308 days, just didn't make the 1,000...

So this works even with putting the smaller diameter gas nozzle in the diesel fill opening?

It must be very comforting to know you never have and never will make a mistake in your life. ?

@Sniper, will AEV be using new diesel-rated springs, or their original ones? Just curious as I thought diesel lift kits were hard to come by right now. Guess you've got a few weeks for them to catch up, too.

Wow, you must be really SAMRT !!!

These stoopid people you refer to, are they the same ones who might use "could not" as opposed to "cannot", "alot" where it should be "a lot" and misspell simple words like "people" ?

I was gassing up my 4Runner a few years ago, and in the bay beside me a service vehicle was pumping the fuel out of a large cube van. I wandered over and the fellow told me the driver filled up his diesel tank with gas. Says it's a common occurrence, enough to keep him busy. A friend runs a few diesels at his shop, and puts a tethered laminated card inside the fuel door 'DIESEL only' and tells his drivers if they screw up, to call and not start the truck, but they pay for the service call. That ended his problems. It's all about focus.
That's not a bad idea, put the card on a little teather so it will fall out when the fuel door is opened to grab your attention.

I keep a pair of gloves in the back seat to wear when fueling to keep the smell off my hands. Started that years ago with my first diesel, since the pump handles were often dirty and had fuel on them. I continue that with the gas engine to keep the interior clean.
I do that because I never know what infected person touched the handle before I did......... and after this virus stuff is done with, I will likely continue after I've seen people wipe their nose, sneeze, whatever, on their hand then grab that nozzle and keep on filling. YUCK!
It's safer cleaning out the litter boxes in the morning than it is to pump gas these days.
