I get that, and obviously driving 5 mph faster on a 10 minute trip isn't saving much...on that trip. But even still looking at an entire year where the average person drives ~15k miles. Say you average 45mph across that years use, you're driving for 333 hours. Increase that average speed to just 50mph and you save 33hrs per year. I'd hardly call that laughable. Saving a few minutes on every drive you make will quickly add up. On the microcosm of 1 short trip 5mph seems like nothing. Over the year it's significant.But you are talking much farther distances and larger speed differences than we're being figured back then. Hours are a totally different thing.
