Didn't know where to put this, so here it is. Interested in a quality winch rated at 10k. And pro's and cons of synthetic rope v cable, and more importantly, your experience with either or both.

I run a 12k Badlands with synthetic. I've yet to actually have to use it for recovery, but I have pulled some sizeable logs up a long hill and pulled a stuck car ramp out on a car hauler. Lol

I watched a video on the differences between the synthetic and wire when they break. The synthetic literally just drops to the ground. The wire springs backward very violently. It sold me on synthetic.

I'm not out wheeling hardcore every weekend, so for me it was a large investment on something I may, or may not ever need. However, when you need one...you REALLY need one.

BTW, I have been running a Zeak (now branded AOTOWO) for two years and an completely satisfied. I picked it before seeing this video, but am not surprised by the results. I use the which 3-4 times per year, most often just to clean and maintain its synthetic line.

I have a lower priced rough country 9500 lb winch. It came with steel cable but I replaced it with synthetic rope. I have used it on and off for 3 years, sometimes in serious situations and it has worked flawless. I do like the synthetic better. I don't like handling the steel and it is heavy and can be dangerous. I don't think you will be disappointed with any number of the winches out there... (The picture is when I just purchased it and still has the steel cable.)

Synthetic, for weight savings and safety.

Brand, just research reviews for what you're interested in.

Want the most hyped and expensive, Warn.

Want something just as capable and less expensive, several brands.

I have a couple of Warn and a few Badlands winches. The synthetic ropes work well like others have said. I have replaced one that was 10 years old due to powder coming out of the rope. I wasn't comfortable using it. It was on a 12k Badlands winch that sat on a trailer ( left out in the weather). The battery and other cables gave up on me. Heavy corrosion was caused from leaving it outside. Replaced the battery and control cables and replaced the synthetic rope.

The other 2 winches that I have with steel ropes, are on a 12k Badland and an 8k Warn. One has cable strands that are broke and gloves are a must. I'd hate to cut myself on that. Gloves and the practic of not not letting the cable slide through your hands is the best idea.

I have a 5th winch not really in use any more. It has a steel cable that is about 60 years old.
Steel will last longer but can be dangerous.

Synthetic will break in time if left in the elements and could be dangerous. Pick your poison.
Inspect your cables and keep them clean.

I have 2 12K Apex Badlands winch's with synthetic line. The one on the JK has been used and abused in multiple recovery situations and has not failed me. The one on the Gladiator has been used to pull bushes, guide trees being felled and other general utility uses. It's a faster winch than many out there, definitely a lot of bang for your $$$. Comes with a disconnect switch, remote solenoid mounting kit and line abrasion shields.

If patient, you can get one for 25% off as those are never excluded from the HF 25% coupons.
