I don’t know that it causes any harm to the motor, as mentioned, lots of Priuses with lots of miles. But, when a hybrid restarts it doesn’t use a conventional starter like ours does, so my biggest ‘damage’ concern is the starter.
I don’t use it because I find pressing the button to be less of an annoyance than not.
I guess if I was buying used, and there were two identical jeeps from two identical guys, one that pressed the button every time and one that didn’t, I’d buy the one that never used start stop.

March of 2023 my 2021 was dead in the drive way. I have a decent commute and drive daily. The only warning sign I had was the ess had stopped working, the cluster message said not ready. I jumped the truck and let the dealership work on it as I was still under warranty. Aux battery tested fine main battery failed. Under warranty dealership only changed main battery. Fast forward to 2025 and I got the A! warning light. I decided to change both aux and main. My own dime as my 36 month warranty is over.

New batteries are yellow top optima h7/94r and am14 odyssey.

Worthless tech. I don’t care about fuel savings and the delay is unacceptable. And nothing anyone will say will convince me it isn’t accelerating wear.

I’d also like to know how it affects actual tailpipe emissions since a cat has to be hot to work properly and letting cool a bit at every stop has to reduce effectiveness.

I'm fully in favor of ESS when paired with a manual transmission; driver has accurate control over the thing with the clutch pedal and engine restarts are instant/seamless.

When the belt-driven A/C compressor stops turning, it also has the added benefit of dehumidifying things every so often. I just had a Mazda rental car for two weeks while the Gladiator was in for service, and that moldy/mildewy HVAC "rental car smell" is unpleasant...

I believe that particular temp is part of the programming. They thought of that!

In a lifetime of ownership, the consumer will never benefit from ESS. If you trade up often, the cost of this tech can not recovered in a short period of time. If you keep it for ever, you may end up replacing the more expensive components needed for the ESS design.

Saving money? Bad idea.
Saving the planet? The jury is still out on that.

Haven't really thought much about since using the Tazer to remember my last setting and then pushing the button to turn it off.

It's Shit. It Sucks. It is the worst P.O.S. system I have ever had in a vehicle. The start/stop systems in my Chevy and Toyota work way better. Every time I pull into my driveway and stop my Jeep the engine shuts off, just to immediately start back up again when I shift into Park, just to be shut down when I turn the Jeep off. There is no way that process can be good for the engine or starter.

On the 4xe, do you get the battery charging message or does it say " not ready". I had a 4xe rental that never said battery charging. Just not ready was displayed after warm up.
She was driving and read it to me and I do believe it said battery charging.

It's an opinion poll. Nothing wrong with it at all. A person's perception is their reality.
True enough, but there are those who have negative opinions based on lies, bad information, and because the Internet told them so. If they simply find it annoying, well, that's that. I see a lot of bs out here and the Wrangler forums and people who just don't give a rip about facts. Sort of like the guy who said these only hold 5 quarts of oil due to some epa bunk. People believe that crap blindly

It is and thus my bit about opinion based on ignorance and "I think .." rather than fact. I have posted a partial list of over 2 dozen things it checks for. That one made my points perfectly. And the starter crap is another one of those things. I posted an engineer's comments on starters but we still see that. So it's opinions based on lies and bad info, not informed opinions.
